Newsletter 3 - February 26, 2021

From The Principal

Both parents and teachers talk about the importance of resilience in enabling children to succeed in an uncertain future.  Lifelong learning involves capabilities such as flexibility, curiosity, tolerance for failure and collaboration.  These skills are of critical importance.

We tend to think that every moment, decision, success and failure is critical, but what’s critical over time is that our children develop worthy attributes such as treating others with respect, compassion and care.
Our goal is to give children the time and opportunities they need to nurture these qualities, and to model them ourselves.

If we think of children growing up as a movie, not as a snapshot.  What looks critical at one moment often becomes incidental over the course of time.  Rather than shielding children from failure or choreographing successes for them, we turn them into opportunities in order to grow.

Adapted from Raising Resilient Kids Who Are Prepared For the Future.

Students Online Policy Permission Form for K-6 students

Thank you to all families who have submitted the 421 response to this form so far.
If you have not done so, please complete a copy of this form, one for each of your children. To be compliant with new Department of Education guidelines we are required to seek your approval for your child to have access to online services provided by the Department of Education. At Subiaco it is the student’s Department assigned username that gives them access to the internet when working in 1-1 iPad classes. In all other year groups this username is their login to selected programs such as the Acer PATs assessments.    K-6 Students Online Permission Form

Third Party Services Permission and Viewing Form.

Thank you for the 281 K-3 responses, and the 183 Yr4-6 responses that we have received so far to the Third Party Permission and Viewing Consent Form. If you have not done so, please complete a copy of this form, one for each of your children. You can select the appropriate form from the links below.

The Department of Education has updated school requirements around the use of Third Party Services when students work in an online environment.

The purpose of the Third Party Permissions form is to notify you, in compliance with Department of Education requirements, of some of the Third Party Services that we use as part of running the school. It is also to seek permission for your child/children to use the suite of Apps, Programs, and other online resources that are integrated into our learning programs, where we have to share some student information and clarify the sort of information that may get shared.

Uniform Shop News

My name is Shan Carberry and I am the new Uniform Shop Coordinator. I am very familiar with the school as my 2 adults daughters are past students and now my 2 grandsons are here as students!

The start of Term 1 has been a little difficult for everyone with the short supply of essential school uniform items. My sincere apologies for this, the pandemic and closures of factories had a huge impact on our deliveries. I am working through the delays and can assure you the Uniform Shop will soon be fully stocked with the majority of items!

The new extended trading hours for the Uniform Shop are :
Tuesday- 8.30 till 10.30
Thursday- 8.30 till 10.30

I do hope the extended hours and extra day will give you more shopping time after drop off! Please come and say hello and shop at your leisure. Shopping online is always available if you find it easier.

If any parents would like to volunteer helping with stock for an hour on Tuesday or Thursday, please come and have a chat to me. I am looking forward to becoming part of the School Community once again.

Dogs on the school Premises
For the health and safety of all children we ask you do not bring your dog onto school grounds at drop off and pick up times and do not tie up your dogs at an entrance to the school.

Lessons Available Before and After School
Many parents have requested details of the external providers who utilise the school facilities outside of school hours. Please click HERE for a list of lessons that they offer during each school term.

The hiring of the school facilities to external providers is done so in good faith. Whilst every effort is made to ensure providers offer an appropriate service, the school takes no responsibility nor endorses the quality of these businesses.
In addition, our facilities are also used by school teams such as netball, football, basketball etc.

Crossing Guard Reminder
A reminder for children to use the crossing outside the school entrance when the crossing guard is working. If the crossing guard is absent, which happens from time to time, children should cross at the lights.

Head Lice
We request that you check your child’s hair once per week and follow the recommended treatment if necessary. Please take the time to read the attached fact sheet which gives information on signs, what to look for and treatment options.

Student Photos
All parents like to take photos of their children at assemblies and whole school events. If you are including children other than your own children in the photo, as a courtesy, it would be appreciated if group photos are not placed on social media unless you have
the permission of the other parents.

P&C News

P&C AGM - Monday 8 March 7.00pm school library.

Junior Swimming Carnival - Wednesday 3 March
The Year 2 parents are organising a food stall to raise money for the P&C which will be held next Wednesday, 3 March at recess time.  This will be held during the junior swimming carnival as the older years are now going to Claremont Pool for their carnival.

We would love donations of food to sell at the stall and there are collection boxes outside the art room, in the upper & lower block halls.  We are not able to sell home baked goods under the Education Dept COVID guidelines but welcome donations of packaged food (cakes, muffins, popcorn, chips etc) and items prepared in a commercial kitchen.

On the day, food will be sold for prices of 50c to $2 and children are encouraged to bring along their small change to purchase morning tea.

Uniform Shop Parent Volunteers
We have a lovely new uniform shop lady named Shan who started at the beginning of the year in the role.  The uniform shop is very busy on the mornings it is open (Tues & Thurs) and we are looking for parent helpers who are available for an hour on either of those mornings from 8.30 to 9.30 am to help with orders.  Ideally we’d like to do a roster up and so you can nominate whether you’re available once a week, once a month etc.  If you’re interested, please email the uniform shop (uniform@subiprimarypc.com.au)

Sale Items in the Uniform Shop
We have discounted the price of swimming ponchos to $30. These are great with the swimming carnivals coming up to help keep the kids warm.

The fundraising tea towels for the 2020 Kindy, PP and Year 6 classes are all discounted to $9 if you’d like to purchase any more of these.

Western Metropolitan Regional Council - 7 Top Tips to Reduce Waste in 2021.

Go digital
Choose to receive your bills and subscriptions online. If you love reading, are you ready to give up the hardcopy in preference for online books?

Quit disposables
Can you give up disposable coffee cups for good? Need a coffee hit but forgot your cup? Take a seat and dine in. Your coffee will taste better and the breather might be just what you need! Visit Plastic Free July for more simple swaps to avoid disposables and single use plastics.

Buy in bulk
Seek out your closest bulk food store and buy what you can in your own bags and jars. Check out our handy factsheet on How to Reduce Packaging.

Make your own
Taking your own lunch to work is a great way to use up leftovers, save money, reduce food waste and reduce food packaging.  What’s not to love?

Embrace reuse
Before buying new or getting rid of the old, consider local reuse and repair avenues. You can gift, donate, sell, repair or find just about anything with a little know how. And, it’s easy!

Love your food
Thirty-five percent (35%) of the contents of a general waste bin is unwanted food. This accounts for 5 million tonnes of food wasted, or the equivalent of 9,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools of food waste landfilled each year. Simple tips like menu planning, making a list, sticking to your list, loving your fridge and freezer and eating your leftovers can all reduce the amount of food landfilled each year. And for food that can’t be kept, you can Compost It.

Put your waste in the right place
You can reduce your waste by putting it in the right bins or taking it to the appropriate facilities to be recycled or disposed of safely. The WMRC offers workshops, online information, recycling and disposal facilities and events to help you put your waste in the right place! Follow us on socials or subscribe to our Word on Waste newsletter to be kept informed of upcoming events and up to date recycling information.

Subi Lions Auskickers
Registrations for the Subiaco Junior Football Club Auskick 2021 season are now OPEN on the SJFC website at the following link:
www.subiacojfc.com.au/index.php/auskick/auskick-registrations/

Please note that Auskick registrations are via the new PlayHQ platform this year, and the league has moved away from SportsTG for Auskick. This should be a new and cleaner platform for us going forward, but it means you may need to register as new if you do not have any type of registration with PlayHQ (i.e. you may already have a login for your player which you have used for other sports).
If you played Auskick last year, but are now playing in the Year 3 competition, please register on the SJFC website at the following link: www.subiacojfc.com.au/

As the Junior competition has not moved over to PlayHQ (for now), the Junior club registration (Yr 3 and above) will still be in SportsTG. Year 3 members will need to register as a new member even if they were previously an Auskicker with our club.
We are always excited to see new players at the club, so if you of anyone transferring from another club, or if you have any specific queries on registration, please pass on my contact details (mattwright37@hotmail.com).
We are looking forward to another exciting year for the mighty Subi Lions!
