Academic Results
The St Andrew's Cathedral School class of 2017 has graduated with very pleasing results. Over 50 students (32.9% of the cohort) received ATARs above 90, and close to half (49%) gained ATARs above 80.
Moreover, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that middle ranking students significantly lifted their performance in the HSC and IB. There were over 95 Band Six results recorded. The highest single mark was obtained by Linjian Li, with a 50 out of 50 in Music Extension. The highest result in a Two-unit subject was Ben Moore’s 99 per cent in Mathematics and Sangay Linkins achieved highly as an ‘all-rounder’ – that is, a student with Band 6s in 10 or more units.
Andrew Waldin’s Design and Technology major work has been selected for the Design and Technology Shape Exhibition 2017 and will be displayed at the Powerhouse Museum. Altogether, eight Design and Technology Major Works were nominated for Shape, with six Drama Onstage nominations, and three Music Encore performance nominations.
Our dual duxes of the IB Diploma are Sena Adachi and Sean Perry, who both achieved a total of 43 IB points (ATAR 99.70). In all, there were eight results above 98.0 from IB students.
The desire of St Andrew’s is to prepare and graduate, in conjunction with parents, flourishing human beings as young adults who will enjoy successful and worthwhile lives. Our pastoral, co-curricular, Christian Education and sporting programs are designed to this end.

A new chapter in our history begins...
When St Andrew’s Cathedral School (SACS) opened in 1885, it had no building of its own that could be used for a school. Its physical location remained uncertain for the first 90 years of its history and the school used nine different campuses over that period.
In 1971, as plans were being made for St Andrew’s House, SACS was threatened with closure and removal from its city location. Canon Melville Newth, the Head of School, wrote that “for the whole of the year, the fate of the school seemed to be hanging in the balance.” Fortunately for us, it was finally decided to build a school on the top two floors of the new St Andrew’s House Building. Finally SACS had a home!
From 1976, we occupied levels 7 and 8 and the rooftop playground. It is interesting to note that the windows on levels 7 and 8 are different to the rest of the building. This was because they were built to be opened for ventilation, as the idea of an air-conditioned school was not conceivable to the planners. In 2000 the school expanded to Level 6 of St Andrew's House, taking the top three floors and the rooftopp. The formal entrance was a later addition, with the foyer and library being developed in 2006. Prior to that everyone entered the school from Kent Street.
Various different spaces and shopfronts have been leased over the years for specific purposes as the school has expanded. In 2012, SACS took over Level 5, consolidating the school into our two current campuses, St Andrew's House and the BBC.
Our school is currently experiencing unprecedented demand for enrolment placements. To fulfil this demand, and provide optimal facilities for learning and engagement, we are thrilled to be able to expand to Level 4 of St Andrew’s House. This additional space has allowed us to dedicate different floors to different stages of learning. Over the last summer – every level from 4-8 has benefited with new agile and exciting learning spaces. Our classrooms are second to none and we would love to show you.

Charles Francis (Carl) Laseron (1887-1959)
Carl attended St Andrew’s Cathedral School in the early 1900s as a chorister and scholar. At that time, students graduated from SACS in Year 9, and then went on to other educational institutions. Carl attended Sydney Technical College part-time, gaining a diploma in geology and worked as a collector for the Technological Museum in Sydney. He published papers on geology and paleontology and became a member of the Royal Society of NSW in 1911. Laseron was a member of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition under Sir Douglas Mawson as biological collector, taxidermist, and general scientific assistant. He spent from 13 months in 2012-2013 on Adelie Land, taking part in two major sledging explorations. He received a Polar Medal for his Antarctic experiences and in 1947 published a memoir of his time there called South with Mawson. Upon his return, he was one of the first to enlist in the
Australian Imperial Force where he was wounded on the second day of the Gallipoli landings while serving as a sergeant with the 13th Battalion. Back home he continued to work in museums, on antiquities and philately, except for a return to the AIF during WWII as a map reading instructor. He will be most widely remembered as a popular and effective exponent of science, publishing several books and articles. Many of his collections are now housed at the Australian Museum and the Royal Zoological Society of NSW conferred on him its fellowship in 1952. A humble man, he sought no honours himself, though his colleagues have given his name to various new genera and species of molluscs. Carl passed away in 1959.

Kate Robertson (nee Scarfo) OA2002
When did you join SACS as a staff member?
2011
What is your current role?
I currently run the K-6 Music Programme, which is an absolute joy!
What have you enjoyed about working at SACS?
I love the students and staff who I’ve been able to get to know over the years. I have learned so much from working with so many different people. I have also been lucky enough to work with some amazing guest musicians over the years, as well as attend a number of overseas music tours which has been a real privilege. It is also extremely rewarding to be able to see students go right through the school. My second cohort of Year 6s is currently in Year 12, so it’s amazing to see the way those students have progressed through the school, many of them still involved strongly in their musical endeavours.
Do you find it helpful, when working, to have been at student at SACS?
When I first started working at SACS as a full time staff member, it was definitely easier to find my way around the school having attended for years 11 and 12. It was also useful knowing some of the staff at the time, and being familiar with the school culture. So yes, I would say that it was definitely helpful, particularly in the initial stages!
Has SACS changed much since you were a student? In what ways?
Yes! When I was a student, we only had girls attend the school in years 10-12. The Junior School started in Year 3 and the whole school (K-12) library was on Level 6! In fact, the canteen was on Level 8. There were a lot of physical differences in the building, but the school still felt like a unique and exciting place, just as it does now.

Yoshi Oshiro OA2013
When did you join SACS as a staff member?
2014
What is your current role?
Since January 2018 I have become a full-time classroom Music teacher (7-12).
What have you enjoyed about working at SACS?
I have thoroughly enjoyed being able to watch and be a part of the musical and personal development of our music students. After four years of teaching at SACS I can definitely say that I have enjoyed every moment it!
Do you find it helpful, when working, to have been at student at SACS?
As a teacher who only graduated at SACS 4 years ago, it’s extremely helpful that I am able to put myself in the students' shoes (especially the nervous year 7s). Also knowing most of the staff members, the school culture and the building (which can be a maze for some) made my transition much smoother.
Has SACS changed much since you were a student? In what ways?
Yes and No! The materials of the building and acquiring of new levels make the physical properties of the school feel different, however the welcoming and friendly nature of the school has become a fabric of the school and luckily remains the same.
