Book of the week: River Cottage Australia Cookbook

Meet Paul West!
We’re excited to announce that last week Paul West dropped into the Better Reading kitchen where Cheryl Akle baked up a storm – turning out Paul’s own Banana Tart Tartine, accompanied by Crème Anglais.

Better Reading TV is a groundbreaking series available for anyone to access via YouTube, where Cheryl meets with writers in the intimacy of her own home.

Paul, originally from the Hunter Valley, has now completed three series of River Cottage Australia despite previously having no experience of television. He was on a smallholding in Tasmania, attempting the self-sufficient life and working as a chef, when a relative suggested he apply to be presenter of the show. It turned out he was the perfect fit.

He’s a down-to-earth, likeable character who talks to Cheryl about his ‘meat and three veg’ upbringing, only having his eyes opened to the pleasures of eating after working on an organic farm as a backpacker.

“What I love about him is how he really does put simple flavours together; it’s about starting off with good ingredients – the best you can get – and eating seasonally,” said Cheryl. “It’s all about not having to be perfect but about trying things out.”

Don’t miss the chance to hear about Paul’s life on Australia’s River Cottage and find out what he thought of Cheryl’s cooking – will he find her ‘strongly caramelised’ Banana Tart Tartine delicious or overdone?

See Paul West cooking up a storm at home with Cheryl Akle on Better Reading TV or buy the book now.

Until next time, happy reading!
