Newsletter 3 - 24 February 2017

From The Principal

Friendships are an important part of life. Our teachers explicitly teach personal and social skills including using appropriate language to communicate feelings, showing empathy and respect for others and strategies to maintain positive relationships over time such as active listening, accepting differences, being cooperative, building new friendships and dealing with bullying.

In addition, Jamie, our Chaplain teaches the BUZ Today and BUZ Friends program for Year 1 & 2 students. The Focus of the BUZ program is to develop social skills to enable children to instigate, build and maintain successful friendships; the ability to cooperate with others in the classroom and playground.

To read the Health Curriculum Scope and Sequence from Pre-primary to Year 6 in Communicating and Interacting for Health and Well-being click HERE. To read a 2 page article on how to make friends and mend friendships click HERE.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the P&C Sundowner this afternoon.

The Pre-primary children in L12 were engaged in Maths patterning, measurements and quantities, and threading for fine motor skills. To see some photos click HERE.

Goal Setting
In L9 we examined Oliver Jeffers, How to Catch A Star and discussed the concept of New Year Goals and Resolutions. A resolution being a promise you make to yourself to be better or to help others. Children then completed personal resolutions and goals for themselves.

Measuring Length
We are learning to measure accurately in L9. This means no gaps, no overlaps and measuring from tip to tip with accuracy.  To see some photos click HERE.

As a special treat the Social Justice Group will be selling iced fruit at lunchtime on Thursday throughout term 1. All proceeds will go to our sister schools in Cambodia and North Western Australia.

Apple Slinky Day
Hundreds of students lined up and waited patiently for their apples to be  slinked.  It was a perfect  opportunity to reinforce healthy eating at recess.

PIAF Writer's Festival
The Year 5’s were privileged to go to the Writers Festival at UWA. Students were able to hear how authors became authors and listened to how authors work and craft words to create wonderful texts. Click HERE for student's thoughts on the event and HERE for photos.

Parking On The Oval

A parent has expressed concern that a number of parents are now parking on the oval near L11. Parents are not permitted to park on the oval as it can be dangerous driving in and out of the oval with children walking to school.

Dogs on School Grounds

All of the school grounds are dog-free zones for health and safety reasons. Please do not bring dogs to school at drop off or pick up times.

Reminders

Medical Action Plans
Parents with children on a Medical Action Plan would have received a new 2017 plan. Please check, update and sign the plan before returning it to the class teacher. If you haven’t received the 2017 plan for updating please contact either your child’s teacher or Deb Hands.

Arrival at school
Please try to ensure that students do not arrive at school prior to 8.30am as no teacher supervision is in place. Students arriving before 8.30am are reminded of the need to assemble, with bags, on the stairs until dismissed at 8.30am.  Thank you for your support. For safety reasons we request that parents do not use the staff car park to drop off and collect students.

Updating School Records
If your address, telephone number or email address has changed, please contact the school office.
