Unlimited Design Potential With Natural Ventilation & Daylight Thursday 15 March 2012
It's True- Natural Ventilation & Daylight can be modern, sexy and smart

See below another Award winning School, St Joseph's School, Ipswich, where the Architects made a great feature of both natural light and ventilation, and this demonstrates how WINDCATCHERS® can be used to considerable advantage to achieve the desired result of cost and carbon savings.

With virtually no limit

There is virtually no limit to the type of roofs that can be used with SUNPIPES® and there is a wide variety of ceiling trims available. Specialist light fittings can also be devised to Architect's design requirements.

Producing great results

See below the London Olympic Handball Arena fitted with 88 SUNPIPES® which will 'provide greater illumination than similar sized conventional lights, and achieve annual energy savings of up to 40 per cent' (Olympic Delivery Authority, 2011).

'Natural Ventilation Comfort Systems in Schools' in Education Matters, 2012, Vol 1

Put the focus back into teaching. A hybrid natural ventilation sustainable solution for our schools improves student learning outcomes by up to 20% through improved indoor climate and inhabitant comfort while also reducing energy use by at least 40% according to the Australian Greenhouse Office (2005), Brager, G.S. & De Dear, R. (2001), Buildings Energy Data Book (2008), The Natural Edge Project (2011), Nicol, J.F. & Humphreys, M.J. (2002), Origin Energy (2008), and Wargocki, P. (2010).

'Imagine that our children could learn the same in 7 years instead of 8 years' says Pawel Wargocki.

Acoustics- Not an issue with automatically controlled windows

A case study for a typical classroom with analysis of measured and predicted data on sound insulation and ventilation rates concludes that there are significant advantages in using automatically controlled windows that can give precise control over the window opening distance.

The results show that window opening distances as small as only 1 cm provide ventilation rates of 3 l/s or greater per person (subject to window dimensions) as well as satisfying the UK & European performance standards for the indoor ambient noise level. Hence, there is the potential to use automatically controlled windows in schools where the external noise level is too high for typical manually operable windows!

Acoustic Testimonials

“The acoustics of the building are very good. Despite the urban location of the building there are no problems with external noise, it has never been necessary to close the windows”.

Technical Building Manager of the Oerestad High School, Copenhagen, Kim Søgreen Pedersen, 2007
