Artswork: South East Bridge enews
January 2017

Editorial

Welcome to the latest edition of the South East Bridge enews

2016 saw Artswork deliver a wide range of programmes, including the completion of a 3-year Creative Skills Initiative, within which we worked in partnerships to create work placements for over 1430 young people across the UK. We also ran a successful conference that took a look at wellbeing, education, arts and culture. Alongside this, we facilitated 8617 Arts Award moderations across the South East, and gained 120 new Artsmark schools.

2017 marks 30 years since Artswork's inception. We will be celebrating the year in style, and we wanted to kick things off by sharing a new film, written, performed and shot by young people in the region. See the links below to watch the film.

This year, we are looking forward to celebrating our 30th birthday with our Creativity & Life Chances conference, which will be taking place in November. We are also going to get stuck into our new programme working with young people leaving care in Portsmouth. And, alongside business as usual, we will be celebrating with our new Artsmark schools this summer.

With a wealth of free resources at your fingertips via the Artswork website, all you need to do is register for unlimited access. If you tick the box to register as an ENYAN member as part of this, you will also receive discounts rates on a selection of our Artsplan professional development courses.

With excitement for the year ahead,

Jane Bryant

Artswork awarded £75,000 investment from Blagrave Trust to support young people leaving care in Portsmouth

We are very excited to announce that The Blagrave Trust will award Artswork £25,000 a year for the next three years, to support our new Creative Skills employability programme, working with young people leaving care. This new partnership will see collaboration between Artswork, Portsmouth City Council Children’s Services and Portsmouth Virtual School, and will focus on championing the education of young people under Local Authority care, in order to improve their life chances as they prepare to leave care.

A series of 15-week creative learning projects will equip care-leavers with the confidence and experience needed to take the next steps into employment or further training. Young people will engage in work placements and develop social, communicative, team, and employability skills, whilst gaining nationally recognised qualifications.

Southampton Primary School children attend Nuffield Southampton Theatres as part of three-year Start programme

Children from seven Southampton primary schools began an exciting new 3 year arts project working with Nuffield Southampton Theatres and leading education charity, Children & the Arts. Just under 400 children have visited the Nuffield Theatre so far for a performance of Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox.

“As a flagship producing theatre, NST has the ability to not only offer children an opportunity to explore great quality arts but also life-enhancing skills and experiences. We are really pleased to be supporting NST to enhance their offer to children and teachers. We look forward to learning and sharing the impact for all involved over the next three years.” (Jane Bryant, CEO, Artswork)

Inspire Music launch new portal featuring case study of Artswork-invested Pantomimus programme

Inspire Music (Paul Hamlyn Foundation) has launched its new portal, featuring a case study of an Artswork-invested Early Years programme, Pantomimus, described as an example of ‘good practice’.

The PANTOMIMUS project was created as an Early Years scheme, to contribute significantly to the improvement of access to music activity for children aged 0-5.

The aim of the project was to address key themes that had emerged from the Earlyarts case studies, as well as add more music to cultural activities, of which most had previously been predominantly other arts disciplines.

STEAM Co. blog | STEAM: A Launchpad for Learning?

“It’s rare that an educational academic is celebrated by all ‘sides’ in the educational debate, that’s both the traditionalist and progressive camps because if you listen to and believe either, there’s no middle ground and agreeing is rarely on the curriculum in their echo chambers.”

Congratulations to our Artsmark schools

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Dovers Green Primary, Lady Joanna Thornhill Endowed Primary, Lindfield Primary Academy, Priors Court Primary and Sidlesham Primary School on their being awarded Artsmark.

This is a fantastic achievement and we are really pleased to have been able to support them on this journey. We are working with these schools, who are eager to share their specialist knowledge to support the wider education network.

We are delighted with their enthusiasm as sharing best practice is a key element of Artsmark’s success. We are currently developing an Artsmark resource suite to support schools.
