Installation view STEEL: art design architecture at Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery Current exhibitions29 September – 2 December 2018 STEEL: art design architecture Following the huge success of WOOD in 2014 and GLASS in 2016, Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery is delighted to present the JamFactory touring exhibition STEEL: art design architecture. This diverse exhibition explores new ways steel is used by artists, designers and architects in Australia in the 21st century. Curated by JamFactory’s Senior Curator, Margaret Hancock Davis, the exhibition includes 29 artists, designers and architects from across Australia. Raw and functional to lustrous and decorative – steel blurs the boundary between utilitarian and precious. The range of cutting-edge design is extensive; fine handcrafted jewellery by Sabine Pagan, sleek wobble pots by Alison Jackson, a stunning espresso machine by Craig Hiron, Brodie Neil’s skilfully hand-formed reverb wire chair and high-tech buildings by award-winning architectural firm BVN. STEEL: art design architecture is a JamFactory touring exhibition. Charles Collin produced a rich body of photographs documenting the workers of BHP and the dock life of Newcastle in the period c1940–70. In 1990, the Newcastle Photographic Society gifted to the gallery a collection of work by Collin. Curated by Rob Cleworth, Your Collection: Hunter Steel continues this ongoing series of exhibitions curated from the gallery’s permanent collection. The stunning silver gelatin photographs by Charles Collin offer a wonderful insight into the architectural and industrial landscape that has helped shape the cultural and physical landscape of Newcastle and the broader Hunter region. It is a treat to see photos of this quality that so beautifully capture the atmosphere. His recent exhibition and collaboration with artist Penny Thwaite, Behave, was on display at the Lock-Up. Tome is an artist whose creative practice is wide ranging in both its intellectual and material scope. Tome has sought to embody the lived experience via the act of making and materials –the gestural marks, texture, viscosity, colour (and smell) become more than analogous references to sensations experienced.
