Research Update

Good afternoon,

Linked below is the Beer Institute’s October 2017 Import-Export Report, which is based on information reported by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Below is some analysis of the report:

  • Imported beer volume spiked in October, driven by the same forces that led October’s domestic beer shipments to spike – an extra business day and a larger than normal holiday load in, caused primarily by the size and timing of this year’s general price increase.
  • All major import source countries grew well above their year-to-date trends (provided that Belgium and Germany are considered jointly due to trans-shipping).
  • As such, October’s unusually strong performance should be considered an anomalous artifact of supply side issues and not the start of a sustained shift in underlying consumer demand.
  • Beer exports seem to have fully returned to their long-run growth path, following a few months of declines in 2016.
