How Do Companies Use Sustainability Ratings?

Our Rate the Raters research has provided perspectives on what ratings need to do better but has lacked a systematic view on how ratings are being used and creating value. In phase five we have explored how ratings are being used by companies, sustainability professionals and investors. For our latest white paper we interviewed around 30 companies and sought their perspectives on how they are using ratings information to benchmark their performance, identify emerging issues and act as levers for change within their businesses.

Why Business Needs More Activism

Last year Mark Lee questioned whether environmental activism was waxing or waning – whichever way, his view was that we need more aggressive campaigning in the coming years. However, it seems the majority of sustainability experts believe that NGOs should be collaborating rather than confronting business. Frances Buckingham sets out why it benefits the private sector not to get too cosy with NGOs but use their campaigns to focus their sustainability efforts and to drive innovation and change.

The Regeneration Salons

GlobeScan and SustainAbility have begun a series of dialogues as the next phase of The Regeneration Roadmap. Taking place in Washington DC, Mumbai, Beijing, Shanghai and London the salons will focus on scaling and accelerating corporate leadership in the field of sustainable development and determine the role the private sector needs to play. From the salons the project’s final output, the Regeneration Roadmap, will take shape.
