NZSM Gala Jazz Concert

Friday, 19 August, 2011  7:30pm in the Wellington Town Hall
Tickets are NOW on sale for the NZSM Gala Jazz Concert starring:

Alex Sipiagin (trumpet)

Bob Sheppard (saxophone)

Steve Houghton (drums)

and Rodger Fox directing the NZSM Big Band and Wellington Jazz Orchestra.

This concert, a highlight of the inaugural NZSM Jazz Festival, will be THE major major jazz event in Wellington for 2011after the Sonny Rollins concert in June. These three American Jazz stars are at the very top of their profession and Rodger Fox will need no introduction to jazz audiences. This promises to be a superb evening of jazz and big band music that fans will not want to miss.

For more information about these jazz legends (and the NZSM Jazz Festival running from 19-20 August in the Wellington Town Hall) see the NZSM website.

....and Sonny Rollins

On behalf of our friends and colleagues at the Wellington Jazz Festival and New Zealand International Arts Festival, we also hope that you are taking up the fantastic opportunity of hearing Sonny Rollins live in concert in Wellington.

Now 80, he is one of the great bebop saxophonists, and still plays with the energy of a man half his age. His only New Zealand concert, this is a rare treat for devotees to see a true 'jazz giant' on stage.

The concert is in the Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington on Saturday 11 June at 8:00pm.

Tickets available through Ticketek:
Adults A Reserve $130, B Reserve $95, C Reserve $50.
Booking fees apply.

Let the workshops begin....

Mention of Sonny Rollins highlights the fantastic opportunites that his visit with accompanying band is presenting for NZSM Jazz Performance students.

Bob Cranshaw – bass player with Sonny Rollins – will conduct a workshop with NZSM players on Friday 10 June from 10:00am in the NZSM Concert Hall, Mt Cook Campus.

This is through the generosity of the Wellington Jazz Festival and NZIAF. Observers are welcome at no cost, but please contact Sarah Smythe, Jazz Performance Programme Administrator, to ensure a place and for updated details.

As Rodger Fox commented the other day, "the students will be in Jazz Heaven" with the number of opportunities coming their way over the next few weeks. There are no less than 11 workshops scheduled with visiting jazz artists over the next week or so. All are being held at the NZSM Mt Cook Campus – again: observers are welcome at no cost, but please contact Sarah Smythe to ensure a place and for updated details.

Queen's Birthday Jazz and Blues Festival

The visiting artists presenting all these fantastic workshops are in town for the Queen's Birthday Jazz and Blues Festival being held at the Expressions Arts and Entertainment Centre in Upper Hutt.

If you like jazz in all its shapes and forms, we highly recommend this event to you: in particular the Tom Warrington Trio (Thursday 2 June at 8pm) and the Jazz Gala (Friday 3 June at 8pm) which features the Wellington Jazz Orchestra, including many staff of the NZSM Jazz programme.
