One for the road?

On May 10th, Wayne Collins launched a jaw dropping Mixxit London session in front of a packed house. Held at Sydney’s iconic Marble bar, a new attendance record was set with 75 bartenders on the day.

It was a rare opportunity to hear a cockney industry legend speak about his foggy home town. Wayne shared stories from the old Roman city and took us on a compelling journey. From Ale houses to a dark gin crazed London and to the great hotels bars which established the city as the drinking epicentre of Europe.

A favourite snippet included a story about ‘One for the Road’. We learnt it was a London expression, when men on death row walked the long road to the hangman (where Marble Arch now stands) people would come out of the tavern and offer the condemned a drink – ‘one for the road mate’...

Attendees also learned how pubs were first named. With a mostly illiterate population the pub’s name was depicted in a picture on a hanging sign; Elephant & Castle, Manor House, Angel and Swiss Cottage to name a few.

Crawley said, “I stood at the back wearing a Harry Johnson Mask with Plummer batching punch and the session drinks. To see 75 bartenders in utter silence for three hours (apart from the laughing) was incredible."

We would like to say a massive thank you to Wayne for making the long trip and making our week a magnificent one!

Vote now!

Every year our industry comes together on one night to celebrate. The boys usually look a bit silly and the girls look amazing. It's a chance to pat each other on the bum and say well done.
These awards rely on your support and voting will only take 5 minutes. If you've been to Mixxit, thought we did an OK job, there's a spot for our name in there. If you think one of our brand ambassador's are all right, Jared Plummer, Ollie Stuart, Dylan Howarth or Brendon Rogers are the names you need to know.

Giant steaks & river beds, with Brendon & Bourbon

Where Bourbon is Bourbon and Steak is a whole Cow! 3 Dashes of Bitters caught up with Brendon our Premium Spirits Brand Ambassador from Melbourne after sour mashing himself in Kentucky.
At Maker’s Mark, he got his feet wet in more ways than one. From some bare foot walking on the limestone riverbed to rolling the freshly filled barrels into the new warehouse.
Brendon followed the whole process; from the local corn, wheat and barley arriving to sour mash, to the stills and finally rolling the barrels into the new warehouse. There’ll be a little bit of Brendon in every bottle of Maker’s in about six years.

Brendon got a lesson in Kentucky hospitality. He found out what happens when you order the large steak at Pat’s or a Bourbon at Freddy’s in downtown Loretto. He is on the record saying ‘No Joke, this steak was bigger than my head!” And what a head! And the Bourbon? It seems a shmiddy is not such a small glass when it’s filled with Knob Creek!

London Calling...

Ollie is freshly back from a hands-on visit of London's oldest hotels, and he is really eager to share his findings. From Katherine Hepburn at Claridge's to the real Hanky Panky and the magnificent martini trolley at the Connaught.

This is the possibly the funniest thing I've ever seen online! It's about the best way any bartender can spend 5 minutes.
