BESIX Watpac team arrives in Christchurch

A team of eight construction, planning and design experts from Australia has arrived in Christchurch as work on the concept designs of the Canterbury Multi-Use Arena progresses.

The BESIX Watpac management team from Brisbane is leading a consortium of  international and local NZ consultants and contractors called Kōtui.

BESIX Watpac project director, Greg Muir, says establishing a team in Christchurch City Council’s Te Hononga Civic Offices enables them to strengthen its collaboration with the Council and facilitate quicker decision-making.

“Our work on the concept design is progressing very well, and being on the ground enables us to gain first-hand knowledge of the city, as well as being able to work closely with Council staff and other members of the Kōtui team,” Mr Muir says.  “Once the concept design of the CMUA is agreed, the next stage will be to complete a preliminary, then developed design. This process will be completed early next year, and will essentially inform the brief for the CMUA’s construction.”

The Kōtui consortium includes BESIX Watpac, Christchurch-based construction companies Southbase Construction and Fulton Hogan, local seismic engineering specialists Lewis Bradford, Christchurch architects Warren and Mahoney, and global stadium design experts Populous and Mott MacDonald.

New Stakeholder  Manager

Karli Bristed from Place Consulting has been appointed as CMUA's Stakeholder Manager.
Over the next 12 months Karli will work closely with our strategic partners, stakeholders, and organisations to ensure they’re kept up-to-date with the project's progress during the design phase.
“Strong relationships with stakeholders are vital in a major project like the CMUA,” she says. “I want to ensure everyone has a great understanding of the project, and to be a key point of contact for stakeholders if they want to ask questions."
Karli worked on CERA's stadium business case and was involved in major projects for Ōtākaro Ltd and SCIRT.
