RMOW to celebrate 40th anniversary celebration on Sunday, September 6 |
The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is counting down the 40 days until the municipality’s 40th anniversary on Sunday, September 6.
The community and visitors are invited to save the date, and to share their Whistler memories by submitting images to Instagram with #mywhistler.
To share historical or current photos of Whistler, use the hashtash #mywhistler and follow @rmwhistler on Instagram.
We’d love to see everything from your favourite moments in Whistler’s parks, to photos of biking, hiking and skiing, as well as historical Whistler moments like the announcing of the Olympics, your outfit in Whistler’s first Canada Day parade, or a photo of what Whistler looked like before the Village was built. We’d love to see Whistler’s history through your eyes.
On September 6, the festivities will include music, entertainment, gelato, roving street animation, and a performance from iconic Canadian folk rock band Spirit of the West—who have a long-standing connection with Whistler.
In the buildup to the event, a series of stories, photos and facts will be added daily onto whistler.ca/40. These images and stories will also be compiled into a pullout in Whistler Question. The RMOW is also partnering with Mountain FM for radio content around the 40th anniversary of the municipality theme.
To find out more, visit whistler.ca/whistler40 and watch for updates on our Facebook, Twitter and the new Instagram (@RMWhistler) channels.

Summer food truck pilot program launched in parks |
The Resort Municipality of Whistler has launched a food truck pilot project, which will run through the end of July and August in Rainbow Park and Lost Lake Park. The existing concession operator, Gibbons Hospitality Group, will be coordinating two local food truck vendors at these park locations.
The goal of the pilot project is to test opportunities for providing mobile food services to enhance the experience of residents and visitors in Whistler’s parks.
Visitors and community members are invited to provide comments during the pilot project directly to the food truck vendors or by email to parks@whistler.ca.
Desire for mobile food services in parks was expressed by community members during Whistler’s Recreation and Leisure Master Plan update process.
Feedback about the pilot project will help inform discussions about a potential mobile food services program for next summer.

Seventy-six students play series of free performances throughout Whistler
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestral Institute at Whistler (VSOIW) had an exceptional first year. The program, a partnership between the Vancouver Symphony Society (VSS) and the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW), ran from June 28 to July 5.
Seventy-six talented students attended from around the world.
The students participated in private classes, master classes, chamber and orchestral rehearsals, and gained individual coaching and mentoring from award winning VSO faculty, culminating in a series of performances. The Canada Day evening concert filled Millennium Place to capacity and the Whistler Institute Orchestra’s concert attracting over 400 people to Whistler Olympic Plaza on July 5.
“We were all overwhelmed by the number of applications received for the VSOIW’s first year. Thank you so much to everyone at the Vancouver Symphony Society and staff at the Resort Municipality of Whistler for making this a success. Bringing these talented young musicians to Whistler is a Learning and Education task force initiative in line the municipality’s Economic Partnership Initiative action plan to enhance arts and cultural development—it is also a great way to fill Whistler with wonderful music,” said Mayor Nancy Wilhelm-Morden.
The educational program was developed to coincide with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra outdoor concert program in Whistler.
The VSOIW is for students between the ages of 15 and 25. A large number of the students were post-secondary age and some were high school age, most aspire to pursue professional music careers. 2015 was the first of a three-year partnership between the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the RMOW.
Applications for the 2016 Institute will open in the fall this year. Follow Vancouver Symphony Orchestral Institute at Whistler on Facebook, Twitter and at www.vsoinstitute.ca for the latest information.
