Introduction

Welcome to the December 2010 issue of our newsletter. I hope you are making the most of the sunshine (when it appears) to top up your Vitamin D levels.

Welcome to those of you who are receiving our newsletter for the first time. I hope you find the information contained within interesting. This newsletter is published every two months and contains information on different topics related to health and wellbeing.

In this edition, I talk about high blood pressure.  It can contribute to a wide variety of health problems but there are a lot of simple things you can do to keep your blood pressure under control.

Also, Hayley, our relaxation massage therapist has a wonderful offer for you just in time for Christmas as well as gift vouchers for those last minute gifts.

I also have a special naturopathy offer to kick off 2011.  Perhaps you would like to see if naturopathy can help you or maybe your focus on your health has waned recently or maybe you would like to boost a New Year's resolution to improve your health by completing a "detox".

Wishing you a wonderful festive season and a healthy and happy 2011.

Yours in good health,

Kaye Wright
Naturopath and owner

The importance of knowing your blood pressure

High blood pressure, or hypertension to give it it's medical name, affects many people, especially as we age.

Blood pressure refers to the pressure your blood exerts on your arteries.  You get two numbers in your blood pressure reading.  The first refers to the pressure when your heart is pumping and the second is the pressure when your heart is between pumps i.e. relaxed.

Often your blood pressure can be elevated without any telltale symptoms and unless you get it checked periodically it can go undetected for many years.  The problem with this is that high blood pressure increases your risk of stroke, heart attack, heart failure or kidney disease; all potentially nasty problems which would be good to avoid if we can.

High blood pressure is considered to be somewhat a disease of lifestyle.  The bad news is you are more at risk of developing high blood pressure if you are above your healthy weight, inactive, stressed, have an unhealthy diet, smoke and/or drink too much alcohol.  The good news is these are all lifestyle factors that you can address (with help if necessary).

Simple measures you can implement include:

  • increase the amount of fruit and vegetables in your diet and decrease foods high in saturated fat
  • increase the amount of physical activity; this can be hard for some people but I think any increase is positive
  • limit your alcohol intake
  • incorporate some relaxation activity into your life or develop some stress management techniques
  • work towards losing a little bit of weight (which you will probably do by adopting the above points)
  • quit smoking

Sometimes you know that you should do these things but it is difficult to get going and there are lots of hurdles to overcome.  This is where working with a naturopath can help.  We can help to identify priorities and come up with sustainable lifestyle changes and dietary suggestions.  We can also prescribe supplements which can help with stress, weight loss, sugar cravings etc as well as herbs and nutrients that work directly on reducing blood pressure.

Given the risks associated with high blood pressure, it's a good idea to know your blood pressure and have it checked periodically.  That way you can track whether it is sneaking up over time and do something about it.  I will often do this as part of a consultation.

So, as one of your New Year's resolutions, make it a goal to find out your blood pressure (if you don't know it already).

A Christmas treat from Hayley...

Feeling stressed at the thought of Xmas?  So many decisions to make? What should I buy for my loved ones?

Why not kill two birds with one stone and buy a restorebodyworks 90 minute massage experience gift voucher?

As a special Christmas treat I will give you $20 off the voucher price, AND if you make an appointment for yourself as well and give yourself  permission to "let go" you also save $20 off your massage too!

To take advantage of this special offer, you need to buy the voucher before 22 December 2010 and you need to book your own massage appointment before 31 January 2011 (gift vouchers will be valid for six months from date of issue)

Not only do I provide a trusting, nurturing environment for you to connect within, but I also use the magic of hot stones, which aid your journey into your realm of tranquility.

Interested?  Call Hayley on 0449 75 74 79.

Will you be healthier in 2011?

The start of the year is a wonderful time to "clean up your act" and kick start a healthier lifestyle with a detox. It is a great way to improve your digestive function, support your liver and perhaps even lose a few kilos. A detox can help you to feel and look fresher and improve your energy levels. Often, it also improves many underlying chronic health conditions.

I can put together a detox programme to suit your needs and objectives consisting of dietary suggestions, herbs and nutritional supplements. It may only need to be a couple of weeks long and it doesn't have to involve fasting or only eating "rabbit food".

If your resolutions include implementing a healthier lifestyle or losing some bad habits, lifestyle and dietary advice along with herbal and nutritional support can be extremely beneficial in helping you achieve your goals.

Perhaps you could do a detox in January to kick start the year or maybe in Febuary and combine it with FebFast.

To make an appointment or find out more, call Kaye on 9620 9503.

A special naturopathy offer

I am offering a 20% discount off initial and follow up consulting fees for appointments conducted during the month of January 2011.

If you've been considering naturopathy this is a great opportunity to give it a try.  Or, if you've lost a bit of focus and haven't seen me for a while it's an added incentive to get your health back on track.

Call Kaye at LaVida Health on 9620 9503 to make an appointment or to find out if Naturopathy can help you.

Christmas Closure...

This year I will be taking a break from COB on Wednesday 22nd December. Please let me know as soon as possible if you will require a consultation or a repeat of your treatments to carry you through until January.

I will be back on deck from January 10, 2011, so if you haven't already done so, please call for an appointment if you would like to kick start your New Year with a detox or some restorative treatments to help you achieve those New Year's Resolutions and sail through 2011.

The other practitioners working out of LaVida Health are taking breaks of various lengths so if you would like to make a myotherapy, massage, hypnotherapy or homoeopathy appointment please call them directly.  Their mobile phone numbers are available on our website.
