Cancers of the immune system like lymphoma and leukaemia affect the entire body’s bone marrow and lymph nodes, but their widespread nature rules out surgery. And, after multiple rounds of treatment, these can become resistant to chemotherapy, often coming back months or years later. For those affected, finding a way to eliminate these cancer cells, and prevent the disease from recurring, means everything.
But new research might have found a possible way of treating these untreatable cancers – and the cure already exists. In a rather unexpected twist, Ingo Ringshausen explains how his team found that alongside chemotherapy, treating “normal” cells in close proximity to cancer cells with a protein-blocking drug can actually make them resistant to lymphoma and leukaemia. Although more trials will be needed, this could offer hope for those
currently undergoing treatment.
Rebecca Long-Bailey is widely spoken of as the natural candidate for Jeremy Corbyn supporters in the Labour leadership contest. But the latest research shows that campaign group Momentum is not as unified behind her as might have been expected. Their support is surprisingly divided between candidates, as Tim Bale explains.
Meanwhile, academics have identified a potential second new planet orbiting the sun’s neighbouring star, Proxima Centauri. They estimate it’s about half the size of Neptune.
