Yvonne Rainer's Trio A: Performance-Lecture
Friday 19 April, 6.00pm

'Dance is hard to see', wrote Yvonne Rainer when making her seminal work Trio A (1966). As a key figure of the New York 1960s minimalist dance movement, Rainer defined a new language of physical movement. In this performance-lecture LA choreographer Sara Wookey, who has been in residence as part of the VCA & MCM Master Teacher Program, will perform iterations of Trio A and discuss her personal experiences of working with the esteemed Rainer.

Dancer / choreographer Frances Rings (Bangarra Dance Theatre) has been on Southbank Campus this semester, working with our production students and third year dancers to create a new work, Impermanence and restage repertoire previously choreographed for Bangarra Dance Theatre - excerpts from X300 – motivated by a series of atomic explosions conducted in the 1950s on Maralinga, Tjarutja traditional lands.

Contemporary Music Ensembles at Bennetts Lane
Tuesdays 23 & 30 April

As part of the warm up to the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, head along to Bennetts Lane Jazz Club over the next two Tuesdays for two energetic sessions of original works and arrangements by students from the VCA Contemporary Music Performance stream. On 30 April, special alumna guest Andrea Keller will give a feature performance on piano and the best ensemble will win a session in the Sound Research Studio at the VCA to record and mix their original compositions.

Louis Andriessen

De Stijl: Music of Louis Andriessen
Friday 26 April, 7.30pm

This concert marks the premiere performance of the MCM New Music Ensemble, bringing together staff, students and alumni to feature the music of 20th century composer Louis Andriessen. His compositions rocked the classical musical establishment, merging the worlds of rock, jazz and contemporary classical music. The program will feature Louis Andriessen's masterpiece De Stijl - based on episodes from the life of famous Dutch painter Piet Mondrian.

Graduating student directors pitch their film concepts and indicate crewing role vacancies across a range of areas including camera, art and sound departments, wardrobe & make-up, production and continuity. Cattapan receives Bulgari Art Award

Congratulations to A/Prof Jon Cattapan who picked up the Bulgari Art Award for his artwork Imagine a Raft (Hard Rubbish 4+5), a triptych painted over a five year period. The prize, one of Australia’s most valuable, consists of $50,000 for the painting acquisition by the Art Gallery of NSW, and a $30,000 residency in Italy. Grads feature in King Kong

On 15 June, forty-nine actors, singers, dancers, circus performers and puppeteers will become the world premiere cast of the epic music theatre event KING KONG – and most of them are Victorians. The VCA is the biggest tertiary provider of cast, with both Adam Lyon (Carl Denham) and Chris Ryan (Jack Driscoll) being graduates, as well as other cast members Ross Hannaford, Sam Hooper, Leah Lim Chris Ostrenski, Joshua Robson and Jacob Williams.

Meet the VCA & MCM

Careers counsellors and specialist arts and music teachers are invited to visit the VCA & MCM Southbank Campus for an afternoon with our teaching staff and students. Choose a presentation by one of our Directors (see below), go on a campus tour to view facilities, then join our teaching staff for refreshments.

Prof Gary McPherson (MCM Director) will present on his own research into music education and the opportunities that tertiary music study offers students in the 21st century.

The VCA Studio: Roam Wide and Dig Deep
Prof Su Baker (VCA Director) will discuss what studio based training means at the VCA and its importance to arts training.
