People at The Stop: Ben Jacobs

There are thousands of people who use, benefit from and work with The Stop every year—and The Stop, in turn, is greatly enriched by their involvement with us. Every month, we’ll profile one of these individuals. This month, we introduce Ben Jacobs, 2010’s Volunteer of the Year.

When Ben Jacobs received the Volunteer of the Year award at this past December’s Annual General Meeting, he was speechless. This is not a common occurrence. The gregarious Ben speaks six languages, including Spanish, Arabic and his native, Tigrigna, and he spends much of his volunteer time at The Stop talking with the community, whether at the intake desk or while handing out food bank hampers. (He'll also stock shelves and mop floors; as Rekha, the Food Bank Coordinator says, he can do anything. And does.)

Originally from Ethiopia, Ben moved to Toronto about four years ago and currently works as a math tutor. He’s been volunteering for more than two years—a friend who used to work at The Stop introduced him to us—and he describes The Stop as a “wonderful place.” “People are treated with respect and dignity,” he says. Patient and modest himself, Ben has been a role model for many other volunteers. "Ben has a really good heart," says Rekha. "He loves talking to people and he's so welcoming. I can really count on him."
