Industry Insider: Online travel

As recently as 2007 70% of UK travelers preferred booking off line. However there has been a clear transition from off line travel bookings to desktop/laptop and then, more recently, towards mobile devices.

In spite of the usually high value of travel sales a recent ABTA survey has highlighted that those between the ages of 15-24 (typically early adopters) 47% had used a mobile device to book travel overseas.

In a travel market saturated with a plethora of apps and mobile websites, if your mobile offering is difficult to use or slow you are turning away potential customers. The importance of having a great user experience on mobile platforms is more important than ever.

Customer experience & mobile commerce

The strong growth in the number of smartphone users accessing online retail sites/apps in all manner of sectors presents both an opportunity and a threat for retailers.

To help you along here are some mCommerce user experience tips:

  • In a booking process provide a clear & well designed ‘first step’
  • Leverage mobile ui elements
  • In any signup or checkout process ensure errors in forms are clearly highlighted next to fields
  • Don't make 'signing up' mandatory for making purchases. Guest logins are an alternative
  • For more on this subject we recently released an mCommerce customer experience report
