Neanderthals liked to look good, it seems. Despite the popular image of them as shaggy, wild men and women, a new study suggests that they may have used the interiors of snail shells to produce mother-of-pearl-style clothing decorations. Chris Hunt reports.

Heading further back in time, it has been suggested that volcanic eruptions around 200m years ago wiped out species and created space on Earth for dinosaurs to flourish. Tamsin Mather and Lawrence Percival explain how they’ve now found new evidence that this volcanic activity had a global impact.

Brexit negotiations are underway – but there remain deep division in the Tory party as to what kind of departure is sought.
