Europe, Earnings,
and Health Care Reform
While major equity indices finished the 2nd quarter in negative territory, we did end the period on a positive note. The short-term concerns that drove the markets lower in May were minimized in June. Europe continued to be the lead story on Wall Street. The Greek elections produced an outcome that substantially reduces the likelihood of the country's departure from the Eurozone in the near future. European leaders agreed to step in and support the financial institutions of the most troubled nations. The markets stumbled through a desolate reporting period and move into July, which marks the beginning of 2nd quarter earnings season. Expectations are low and there is widespread belief that profits will decline for the first time in 12 quarters. It is important to understand a significant amount of pessimism is priced into equity
markets.
