Bill Cade to Receive Honorary Degree at Fall Convocation

As President and chief ambassador of the U of L for 10 years, Bill Cade oversaw the development of many initiatives including a rapid increase in students, growth in research, growth of graduate-level education, and the largest fundraising campaign to date.

As well, Cade strengthened community relations at local, provincial, national, and international levels.

Shortly after Dr. Cade became President, the U of L took its first steps towards becoming a comprehensive university, with the admittance of the first graduate students in the M.Sc. Management and Ph.D. Neuroscience programs.

Ph.D. program offerings expanded in 2004, with the approval of five doctoral programs in science. The U of L continued to grow student enrolment during Dr. Cade’s tenure as President, exceeding 8,000 by 2005. Learn more here.

Kathryn Preuss (BSc '95) Recognized as Alumna of the Year

Recognized for her integrity and impassioned approach to research and discovery, Dr. Kathryn Preuss has made significant contributions to the field of chemistry, establishing herself as a leader in the field.

She graduated from the University of Lethbridge with distinction in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, and received the Faculty of Arts & Science Gold Medal (Science).

Following graduation, she pursued a PhD in inorganic chemistry at the University of Waterloo, which she completed in 2000. She returned to Canada after completing her post-doctoral studies in the United States and is currently an associate professor at the University of Guelph. Learn more about Kathyrn, here.

New Coat of Arms to be Unveiled at Fall Convocation

After a 45-year absence -- and following a lengthy design and approval process -- the U of L will have a fully-registered, heraldically-correct Coat of Arms.

The image and description will be unveiled at the 2012 Fall Convocation ceremony by Bruce Patterson, the Deputy Chief Herald, Canadian Heraldic Authority. Additional information will be released  after the ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 13. The image above shows a small portion of the updated Arms. 

Patterson will also be presenting a public talk  in PE264 on Heraldry on Friday, Oct. 12

Gordon E. Jong Appointed Chair of the University of Lethbridge Board of Governors

Gordon E. Jong, CA, a Lethbridge-based chartered accountant with a long-standing relationship with the University of Lethbridge, has been appointed by the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta as the ninth Chair of the University of Lethbridge Board of Governors.

Gordon Jong will be in CJ's from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11. The University community is invited to drop by and meet -- or get re-aquainted with  -- Gordon in his new role as Board Chair.  

Jong, who earned Bachelor of Science (1980) and Bachelor of Management (1982) degrees from the University of Lethbridge, is a former member of the University of Lethbridge Board of Governors (2006 to 2012) and a 2004 U of L Alumni Honour Society inductee.

Community work has been a staple for Jong. He has served as Chair of the Board of Governors at Lethbridge College, treasurer of the Southern Alberta Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect; Lethbridge Jaycee’s Club; president of the Rotary Club of Lethbridge; and treasurer of the Rotary International Peace Park Assembly. Learn more here.

Immigrant Achievement Award Finalists Include Women and Gender Studies Researcher Glenda Bonifacio

A University of Lethbridge researcher is a finalist in the 2012 Lethbridge Family Services – Immigrant Services Immigrant Achievement Awards.

Dr. Glenda Bonifacio, an Associate Professor in Women and Gender Studies at the University of Lethbridge, is a finalist in the Distinguished Professional category.

The Immigrant Achievement Awards bring awareness to the valuable contribution of immigrants within our community. The third annual awards ceremony, which takes place Nov 8, 2012, will honor 11 finalists in six categories of achievement.

Bonifacio’s research interests are diverse, and include Gender, Migration and Citizenship, Development and Globalization, among other topics. 

Award recipients will be announced at the 2012 Immigrant Achievement Awards which will take place Thursday, Nov. 8 at the Coast Hotel.

New Managers At Edmonton, Calgary Campuses

Dana Corbin and Nicholas Lang’at are the recently-appointed managers of the Calgary and Edmonton campuses.

Corbin (BMgt ’05) is a University of Lethbridge alumna who graduated with Great Distinction. She achieved immediate success in the business world, working with Venture Communications and for Arlene Dickinson of Dragon’s Den fame. 

Lang’at comes to the U of L from the University of Alberta where he was most recently the Faculty of Arts governance officer. Previously, Lang’at worked in housing and student services and was instrumental in providing quality service to the U of A student body while fostering a community atmosphere.

ATB Financial, University of Lethbridge Partner on Business Education Seminars in Southern Alberta

The University of Lethbridge joined ATB Financial officials at the new Highlands Crossing branch in west Lethbridge last week  to announce ATB Financial’s support of the newly-established ATB Financial Small Business Institute Speaker Series.

Led by Small Business Institute directors, Dr. M. Gordon Hunter and Dan Kazakoff, the series will be of interest to those currently involved or considering an investment or career in small business.

A $36,000 investment will help launch the series, which will see industry leaders and researchers visit communities throughout southern Alberta to share their knowledge, insights and experiences on topics related to small business.

The widespread delivery of the speaker series is what makes the program so unique. Presentations from industry leaders and researchers will be made throughout southern Alberta, with a special focus on reaching rural communities.

Jennifer Penner Receives 2012 Friends of Health Sciences Award

On Saturday, October 13, 2012, the University of Lethbridge Faculty of Health Sciences will host the third annual Friends of Health Sciences Awards reception, giving the Faculty the opportunity to show its appreciation to the many individuals and organizations who have supported its programs in practice settings.

Each year, the Faculty of Health Sciences recognizes an individual or an agency that has made a significant contribution to health education and research in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Lethbridge.

This year, the Faculty is pleased to honour Jennifer Penner, RN, BScN, as the 2012 Friends of Health Sciences Award recipient.

Penner is a veteran health-care professional with more than 25 years experience as a registered nurse and nurse clinician in a wide variety of settings across Alberta.

Originally from Bow Island, Alta., Penner entered the health-care profession as a multi-award-winning graduate of the Medicine Hat College School of Nursing and began her career in Bow Island, Alta. Learn more here.

Human Resources Office Rearrangement, October 18 / 19

To provide for greater efficiency, privacy and work flow, the Human Resources Department main office floorspace will be rearranged on Oct. 18 and 19.

Service will be limited and communications interrupted on these dates. The new layout will provide 2 entrances: one for Payroll and one for Human Resources and Pension and Benefits.
