New pump will fix underpass flooding

Recurring flooding of the Grimseys Road/QEII underpass will be a thing of past once a new, more powerful pump is installed.

Last month the Board met with staff and requested a solution to the flooding. The existing pump will be replaced with a more powerful model, which is being shipped from overseas.

In the meantime, if you spot flooding, please report it to Council's call centre on 03 941 8999 and staff will come and pump out the underpass.

Redwood Library will remain closed in order to carry out more repairs.

The library in Main North Road closed on Monday, 29 July to allow for a site upgrade and was originally due to reopen on Monday, 26 August.

However, further investigations show the library requires more work than planned. Read more on Newsline.

Firmer footing for Chancellor Street Footbridge

The risk of frosty morning slips and trips has been reduced after a new layer of mesh was placed over the top of the Chancellor and Guild Street foot bridges.

Community governance staff were contacted by the Richmond Residents and Business Association about a resident slipping and falling over on the Chancellor Street foot bridge on a frosty morning.

We made this health and safety issue a priority and our contractors have been out and placed mesh over the top of the foot bridges to remediate the problem. If you spot other health and safety issues in our community, please let us know.

Safer speed limits for Papanui streets

At our last meeting, the Board approved a proposal to set safer speed limits around Papanui High School and the retail area to improve the safety of all road users.

The plan is to change the speed limit to 30 km/h on Sisson Drive, Restell Street, Winston Avenue and outside Papanui High School on Langdons Road. We've now asked Council to approve this proposal.

In response to comunity requests, we've also asked staff to review speed limits in surrounding residential streets. We'll update you on this once we've received and reviewed the report.

Belfast Play Insights Study

The results of this local study was presented to the Board and Ward School Principals meeting on 16 August. The study highlights the need for children to have the opportunity for unstructured play to enhance their development.

Consultation on a number of projects to mitigate the effects of the Christchurch Northern Corridor closed on 19 August.

We received 253 submissions with fifty people or groups requesting to speak to their submission, which is fantastic.

There were two drop-in sessions over the consultation period with around 40 people attending.

The consultation document was sent to around 9000 properties and posted to 2244 absentee landowners, with key stakeholders and all submitters from the previous engagements also being emailed.

We would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to give us feedback so far. The boards will hear from submitters on Monday 9 September and make a recommendation to Council and Councillors will then make a final decision on the transport projects.

Stay up to date and read more about these projects on here.

The Board would like to extend a big thanks to Council's Parks team for their speedy tidy-up of the cemetary grounds. Earlier this month, a dedicated team of garden and maintenance staff tidied up the area and an aborist has assessed the surrounding trees to ensure we can continue to keep the cemetery looking tidy.
