Greetings from your Community BoardMessage from the ChairKia ora koutou, It's good to get in touch again after the break in our scheduled programming created by the COVID-19 Alert Level changes. Like many of you, we've kept hard at work during this period, with our meetings and interactions with the public all happening virtually. Meetings in person have now resumed, although because our meeting rooms are not considered public places, at this stage we're still asking members of the public to make deputations or public forum by Zoom. Locally, we're happy to see Akaroa Museum and the Barrys Bay Transfer Station back in action, and if Alert Level 2 holds, we hope you can come along to the Ōtautahi Christchurch Community Strategy
drop-in session in Akaroa on Friday. See below for details, as well as news about Naval Point, a new book on local legend Bill Hammond, and the local volunteers we honored last month. A huge thanks to all of you! Highlights of our last meetingThe most recent Community Board meeting was on Monday 20 September. We approved a $500 grant to the Bay News – you may be familiar with this newsletter produced by the Governors Bay Community Association, which is currently only online for most readers. The grant will go towards printing costs of the Bay News, which will be particularly useful for members of our community with no online access. We also discussed a number of topics that have come up in the last few weeks, including:
We also received our Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū Banks Peninsula Community Board Area Report for August 2021, which highlights a lot of the cool stuff going on in our board area. Read our board meeting minutes for more information about these decisions and to see what else we discussed. Celebrating our volunteersOn Monday 2 August, Banks Peninsula's Community Service Awards were presented at a ceremony held at Ōtoromiro Hotel to 14 outstanding volunteers. Supported by the Community Board, these awards recognise and honour the people dedicated to volunteering in our community, many of them for years. Recipients included Marie Rhodes, Kerry Little, Jenny Healey, Dave Hammond, Richard Suggate, Karen Banwell, Valerie Peak, Sheryl Stanbury, Trish Manson, Darryl Crib, Kerry McCarthy, Flora McGregor, Sue-Ellen Sandilands and Ann Jolliffe. A sincere thank you to all. We hope that their stories will inspire others to join them in wholeheartedly supporting our community. We want your feedback on the Ōtautahi Christchurch Community StrategyThis strategy is our commitment to how we will work with others to build a healthy, happy and resilient Christchurch. A number of drop-in sessions have been arranged if you would like to talk to staff about the strategy and your feedback, including one in Banks Peninsula:
The drop-ins are only able to be held if Christchurch is in COVID-19 Alert Level 2 or lower and appropriate health and safety measures will be in place, including signing in on arrival and mask wearing. Consultation runs until 25 October. New bus shelter at HilltopThe Council's new school bus shelter has been welcome news for the pupils (and their parents) who regularly change buses at Hilltop, which can be a cold and windy place to wait. Naval Point work on trackWork at Naval Point-Te Nukutai o Tapoa continues despite last week's announcement the New Zealand Sail Grand Prix will not go ahead in January 2022. The event was scheduled to take place at Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour on 29 and 30 January 2022, but SailGP athletes and support crew were unable to secure spaces in managed isolation (MIQ). Christchurch City Council has been undertaking planned works at Naval Point to prepare the site for the sailing event. SailGP is still in discussions with the Government about whether a Christchurch leg of the international racing series can go ahead as part of a future racing season. New book celebrates singular Banks Peninsula artistA new book about Lyttelton artist Bill Hammond is likely to be extraordinarily popular says its editor, Christchurch Art Gallery Publications Coordinator Sarah Pepperle. “Bill was a legend, one of Aotearoa’s most important artists. This new book Across the Evening Sky offers a fascinating insight into his paintings, many of which have rarely been seen.” Authored by curator Peter Vangioni, the book is the companion to 2007’s award-winning book Jingle Jangle Morning. Work on the project began last year as a collaboration with the artist, who died in January aged 73. It includes a recorded conversation with friend and fellow Christchurch artist Tony de Lautour – a rarity, as Mr Hammond was notorious for refusing interviews about his work. Bill Hammond: Across the Evening Sky is being distributed around New Zealand by Nationwide Books and can also be purchased directly from the Christchurch Art Gallery Design Store. Three waters reform model flawed says MayorChristchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel says the Government’s proposed model for reforming the delivery of three waters is flawed and other delivery and funding options should be on the table. On Monday, Christchurch City Council is holding an extraordinary meeting to consider what feedback it should give the Government on its proposal to transfer control of drinking water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure from 67 councils nationwide to four independent entities. One entity would cover 21 South Island councils, including Christchurch. In a report prepared for the meeting, the Mayor will make a series of recommendations which clearly signal the Council’s opposition to the proposed delivery model and the potential loss of local say in how three waters services are delivered.
