SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT
Every year the BOFA team seeks out films that are WAY out of the mainstream- creative, innovative and original....films that would never see a commercial release in Tasmania. Here are just three of them:

35 COWS AND A KALASHNIKOV
35 COWS AND A KALASHNIKOV

Director Oswald von Richthofen gives us a stunning look at three very different aspects of African life. In Southern Ethiopia we meet the Surma people, whose traditions of cattle herding, elaborate body art and fierce donga (stick-fighting) are now carried out with Kalashnikovs at the ready. In Brazzaville, capital of the Republic of the Congo, the Sapeur (Society for the Advancement of Elegant People) are out and about. Prepare to be charmed by these dandies whose dedication to fashion is truly a sight to behold. Finally we encounter professional wrestlers in Kinshasa, the heaven-and-hell capital of Democratic Republic of the Congo. For some competitors witchcraft holds the key to victory. For others including legendary albino champion Texas and female fighter Zena the Warrior, technique reigns supreme in the ring. This is Africa as you’ve never seen it before... a poetic tribute to the eternal beauty and sublime strength of the continent.

THE WOLFPACK
THE WOLFPACK

Six bright teenage brothers have spent their entire lives locked away from society in a Manhattan housing project. All they know of the outside is gleaned from the movies they watch obsessively (and recreate meticulously). Yet as adolescence looms, they dream of escape, ever more urgently, into the beckoning world. This is the doco that proves that truth really IS stranger than fiction. Once you've met these kids, you won't forget them — or the film that puts a hypnotic and haunting spin on the love of movies. Winner of the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize.

TANGERINE
TANGERINE

Two transgender streetwalkers are out for payback in this incredible Sundance sleeper hit. Shot entirely on an iPhone 5 for practically no money, Tangerine jumps off the screen and grabs you from the first frame. Transgender actresses Mya Taylor and Kitana Kiki Rodriguez play two L.A. hookers on the prowl on Christmas Eve. Sin-Dee Rella (Rodriguez), just out of jail, wants her friend Alexandra (Taylor) to help her track down her boyfriend and pimp, Chester (James Ransone) who has been wandering while she was in jail. Writer-director Sean Baker explores  the Los Angeles sex trade in a groundbreaking film that leaves you in stitches while quietly breaking your heart.

AUSTRALIA / IRELAND DOCU-DRAMA

Produced by Tasmania’s own Roar Films in conjunction with Ireland’s Tile Films, and filmed in Australia, UK, Ireland, USA and Canada, Death or Liberty tells the compelling story of the political radicals and insurgents, regarded as the “terrorists” of their day, exiled to Australia from all points of the British Empire. These revolutionaries, liberal journalists, trade unionists and passionate intellectuals arrived in Australia in convict chains, but laid the basis for our democracy. This is a unique documentary, full of passion, drama, conflict and triumph – an unforgettable historical account of the making of Australia.

The best 35 entries will be shown at BOFA 2015- there will be a short film before each movie throughout the Festival – this is a unique feature of BOFA and not seen at other Festivals. The full list of finalists and their films is on the BOFA website.
