Certified Astym® providers are available at Northside PT!

Northside PT is committed to offering top-quality care.  We have clinicians on staff that underwent the intensive training and education to become Astym-certified.

What is Astym therapy?

Astym treatment is the regenerative medicine of therapy and is designed to restore soft tissues at a cellular level.  It regenerates healthy soft tissues (muscles, tendons, etc.), and removes unwanted scar tissue that may be causing pain or movement restrictions.  Astym therapy has helped countless people by restoring their movement, getting rid of their pain, and giving them back their lives.

Astym treatment is a combination of soft tissue treatment and specific stretching and strengthening exercises.  Small tools are utilized to disrupt scar tissue and unhealthy tissue and to stimulate tissue healing cells in the body. As a result, the healing process is stimulated and tissues can become stronger and less painful, allowing return to normal functional movement.

Astym therapy is so effective because it was scientifically developed to target the actual cause of the pain rather than just the symptoms. The Astym treatment model was developed from years of scientific and clinical research conducted at leading universities and hospital systems.  Astym treatment is unmatched in its ability to resolve tendinopathies, scar tissue problems, and other soft tissue dysfunctions.

Common diagnoses/conditions showing excellent results from Astym therapy:

  • Achilles Tendinopathy
  • Carpal Tunnel
  • Chronic Ankle pain and stiffness
  • Chronic wrist pain and stiffness
  • Golfer’s elbow
  • DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis
  • Hamstring strain
  • IT Band Syndrome
  • Jumper’s Knee
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Trochanteric Bursitis
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Patellar Tendinopathy
  • Post-Surgical scarring/fibrosis
  • Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy

A typical course of Astym treatment will last 4-6 weeks (approximately 6-9 visits) and there are usually no restrictions on activity while undergoing treatment.

Keeping it Consistent: 5 Exercises to Avoid Running Injuries

By Rob Barnes PT, DPT, OCS, Director | TAI Physical Therapy – State Street

The New Year brings potential for new fitness goals, new PR’s, new races as well as the potential for new injuries. We promise ourselves that we are going to strengthen more, stretch more and prepare more. We sign up for Yoga, Pilates, and weight classes in hopes to better prepare our bodies for the race season. However, as Spring approaches and training volumes increase, the strengthening and stretching routines designed to prevent injury are performed with less frequency.

The key to remaining injury free is consistency in several areas: flexibility, core stability, lower extremity strength, and quality technique. Keep consistent with these 5 drills and exercises to avoid injury this year. Try each of the below exercises one time per week.
