MEDIA RELEASE 4 August 2017 Green Asylum by Charlotte Haywood Green Asylum is a large-scale experimental textile and video installation that blurs the boundaries between tapestry, weaving, architecture, landscape and language by multi-disciplinary creative Charlotte Haywood. Haywood’s architectural tapestry and video works tell stories within the Australian landscape seeking narrative and language from the past-present-and-future. Her work is influenced by ephemeral, temporary and sacred shelters, specifically the structures of Indigenous Australia, Asia, Euro-centric steeples and refugee tents from which she creates multi-threaded and multi-narrative architectural forms. Haywood intends for the exhibition Green Asylum to questions the ‘architecture’ of survival. She explores the shifting values of land and architectural practices and she weaves these stories into her tapestries using re-purposed hospital blankets, tarps, uniforms, high-vis safety gear, life jackets, dressing gowns, sheets, mourning wear, towels, active wear, camo, agri-mat and babies’ blankets. Charlotte has a unique, multi-disciplinary approach to her practice and works across mediums including textiles, sculpture, installation and the moving image. She includes diverse cultural and linguistic groups within Australia in her video work which explore the gestures of the hand as a form of communication and action. Charlotte's work is collected by the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, ARTBANK and privately. The work in the exhibition Green Asylum was supported by the Australia Council (2016) and includes woven wall pieces, video and large scale installation. "Green Asylum is multidisciplinary project that gives us cause to think deeply about the diversity of our cultural experience," said Lisa Cahill, CEO and Artistic Director, ADC. The exhibition will be opened on Thursday 17 August by Professor Jennifer L. Biddle, Director Visual Anthropology & Visual Culture, National Institute for Experimental Art (NIEA), UNSW Art & Design.
