It would be one of the most controversial appointments in UN history. Diplomatic sources have indicated to Rosa Freedman that Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the US at the centre of the Trump national security storm, has been lined up to be the next United Nations head of counter-terrorism. But we shouldn’t be surprised, says Freedman – it goes to the heart of the murky way the UN appoints its senior officials.
One of the most common genetic syndromes is 22q11.2 deletion and yet you’ve probably never heard of it. It affects one in 2,000 live births globally, and can cause both serious mental and physical health issues. Hayley Moulding explains how researchers are still trying to get to grips with it.
The Labour party has published its 2017 election manifesto, including plans to renationalise the railways and raise taxes for the rich. Under Jeremy Corbyn’s government, tuition fees would be abolished and tough measures implemented to penalise very high pay. It might sound radical but at least it means voters are finally being offered a real choice, says Ben Williams.
