Hi there, Welcome to the May 2021 edition of Innovation Lab news, with updates on events and opportunities about data science in the not-for-profit sector. What we've been up toHow trustworthy is an automatic classification tool? Our Community’s Innovation Lab data scientists have examined the CLASSIEfier algorithm – an automatic classification tool which classifies grant applications – to find ways to identify biases and attempt to address them. The results of our research are summarised in a white paper, Ethical Considerations in Multilabel Text Classifications. Read the summary here, or click the button below to download the report. Register for free for Good Tech Fest Join us at this year’s Good Tech Fest, where Our Community’s resident data scientists will be speaking about their most recent projects. Paola will discuss the design of a Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) auto-classification algorithm and how this can be used to analyse grantmaking in Australia. Nathan will share lessons learned from guiding not-for-profits through data projects, reviewing our approach and the challenges faced. How AI is helping the social sector answer complex questions Director of data intelligence at Our Community Sarah Barker (pictured) spoke with Seer Data & Analytics as part of their Community Connection series about trialling and refining methods to build the capacity of grantmakers and not-for-profits. For-purpose data community on Slack We’ve started an online community to connect data practitioners involved with Australian for-purpose organisations, and to provide an ongoing forum for members of the Data for Social Good Melbourne meetup. It’s organised on Slack, a work-oriented messaging platform, and is zero commitment. We hope it will become a convenient place to ask questions, hear about opportunities, and share ideas and events with each other. To join and invite others, here’s a link: https://tinyurl.com/dfsg-slack - introduce yourself there and let us know what you’re working on! From our networkBook a free session with WhyHive, a social enterprise specialising in data science If you’re reading this newsletter, you’re already aware of the benefits that becoming data driven can bring to your not-for-profit. The issue is not one of will, but resources (funding, time, knowledge, etc). And perhaps uncertainty about where to begin. That’s why we developed our data capability framework and step-by-step guide to starting a data project, and connect people and organisations through datathons, tutorials and meetups. Recently, we’ve talked to data science social enterprise WhyHive, who want to empower for-purpose organisations to use data to maximise their impact. WhyHive offers purpose-led organisations low-bono or pro-bono services, based on project need and resource availability. Read, listen, watch
That's all from us. Take care. |
