Highlight: RI Researchers Invited to Improve their Poster Presentations at Free Workshop

How can you design a scientific poster that effectively conveys your research and captures the attention of a passerby at a busy scientific conference? On a more basic level, how can you communicate scientific data through compelling visualizations?

With support from the Rhode Island NSF EPSCoR , the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography's Metcalf Institute for Marine & Environmental Reporting is partnering with the Rhode Island School of Design to hold a SciComm Exchange and mini workshop for Rhode Island researchers on Thursday, November 13, 2014, from 12:00 - 3:00 PM, at The Edna Lawrence Nature Lab, 13 Waterman Street, Providence.

12:00 - 1:00 PM (lunch included): SciComm Exchange
Experts will discuss techniques for creating compelling visualizations of scientific data, including large and complex data sets, for scientific and non-scientific audiences. Participants will have an opportunity to have informal conversations with experts and their peers about their communication challenges.

1:00 - 3:00 PM: Mini Workshop
Workshop speakers will share tips for designing clear and engaging conference posters using traditional tools and interactive media. Participants will have an opportunity to work, hands-on, with design experts from RISD to improve their approaches toward creating scientific posters.

The workshop is free and open to natural and social science faculty, research staff, and graduate students from colleges and universities throughout Rhode Island. RISD faculty and graduate students interested in applying design tools to communicate science are also encouraged to attend.

Space is limited, so register here by November 7!
