Must-have new arrivals - great summer wines - Moscato, Rosé and Pinot Grigio

Moscato - delicate light whites with a touch of 'spritz'

It is a pleasure to drink bright, cold, sparkling Moscato in Venice, Italy. But why spend all that time on an airplane when we have magnificent Moscato right here in Australia? Fresh, crisp and invigorating, Moscato is a fast-growing wine style, mostly because it is delicious. It has a light, perky fizz and natural raciness; the best are ever so slightly sweet with a refreshing spritziness. They are generally low in alcohol – half, or less, than still wines.

The punchier styles from Italy have become very popular in Australia, and Australian wineries have responded with their own approaches. The sugars that have not fermented into alcohol usually deliver a very appealing richness.

Serve as an aperitif or to toast a celebration, Moscato delivers exactly what you need – and for a reasonable price. World Wine sells more than a dozen different Moscatos.

Rosé - Let summer begin .....

We talk about rosé all year round at World Wine and for one good reason: we carry so many of them and it takes a long time to drink through them all. It’s easy to fall in love with one and drink multiple bottles of it for weeks before moving on to the next bottle of your affection. By the time our rosés from France, Italy and Australia are thoroughly vetted, the next vintage has arrived and the process starts all over again.

I encourage you to do the same at home – have a bottle of rosé on hand and keep your selections diverse. Drinking rosé during summer is ideal, but don’t restrict yourself – extend your summer and enjoy rosé year-round.

A rising wine star - Pinot Gris

In Italy it is called pinot grigio, in France it is called pinot gris, and here in Australia it’s called either, depending on the whim of the winemaker (both mean ‘grey’ in their respective languages). And we are selling a lot more of it (we’ll call it gris, as that is the correct name for the grape) now than a couple of years ago: it is a lighter, flavoursome style with some similarity to Chardonnay with good palate weight and flavour. Pinot gris styles range from fresh, zippy, vibrant wines with crisp lemon flavours, through to richer, oilier types with more body and texture. All are excellent food partners thanks to their palate power and varietal characters.
