The University will close Friday 10th April- Wednesday 15th April, due to the addition of two rest days following Easter Monday. We know you will be keen to complete your coursework and revise for exams within this time, but these additional days are for both staff and students, so please do take a well-deserved break! COMMERCIAL AWARENESSLaw News Solicitors Regulation Authority to branch out as ‘distinct legal entity’ within the Law Society The decision was made after the SRA called for ‘the maximum regularity independence as possible’, to distinguish more transparency for the profession and their distinctive responsibilities. As quoted ‘The Law Society as the independent professional body for solicitors and the SRA, as a regulator, have distinct yet complimentary roles.’ City firms pledge £85,000 to save Law Centre closures Public demand for Law Centres to support a community who cannot gain access to legal support increases. Yet without emergency funding, Law Centres will have to close. It’s estimated £500,000 needs to be raised to sustain centres in most need of help. Since Covid-19 lockdown, the centres have already seen a sharp rise in domestic violence, employment matters and expect an increase in debt and immigration problems. Government announces Legal Aid support package for lawyers to ‘weather the Coronavirus pandemic’ In Crown Court cases, lawyers can: access payment before case closure, the threshold of £5000 for application of funds is reduced to £1000 and time length of case threshold of six months will also be reduced. This is as a result of social distancing measures in the UK judicial system, where there have been subsequent delays in case progression and a reduction of new cases. High Court backs claimants in VW emissions litigation Deemed by HC that VW inserted unlawful ‘defeat devices’ in thousands of VW diesel engines.
