Click here March 2022 Impact Newsletter CPC Childhood Development Services Hosts Cultural Explorers Program at Essex MarketFor the past few weekends, CPC Childhood Development Services has been hosting the Cultural Explorers Program at Essex Market! This program allows youth to experience global learning through local discovery by engaging in community and cultural exploration. For example, parents and their children learn how to talk about race using food to spark discussions.EDUCATIONWe provide high-quality learning opportunities for all ages—from Pre-K and after-school enrichment to adult English language classes—because education is lifelong. Queens Youth Visit Stony Brook University For Mid-winter RecessCPC youth participants enjoyed their first college visit in over 700 days! Thirteen youth from Learn & Earn Queens Afterschool Program visited Stony Brook University (SBU) over mid-winter recess on February 25th. CPC COMPASS Programs and Essex Street Continue To Partner on Healthy Cooking Classes CPC COMPASS continue to partner to provide students and parents of CPC's elementary afterschool programs cooking classes at Essex Street. These healthy cooking classes provide a delicious and nutritious way for both children and parents to learn more about the food they eat! FAMILY SUPPORTWe make it easier for individuals and families to access personalized social resources because support is fundamental at every age. CPC Nan Shan Senior Center Conducts Elder Abuse Outreach in Queens On March 10th, CPC Nan Shan Senior Center staff presented a workshop on elder abuse to members of Bayside Senior Center. Staff have been presenting workshops on safety at other senior centers around Queens in person, virtually, and in hybrid formats. The presentations include what to look out for and how to seek help if you or a loved one may suspect elder abuse. Hong Ning Seniors Attend Book Launch at Yu and Me Bookstore On the occasion of his publication, "Some Chinatown Portrait," David Zheng invited the seniors of Hong Ning Housing to showcase some of their artwork alongside his photographs. Emily Yang, Hong Ning's Volunteer Art Instructor, had been working with the seniors for almost three weeks to create the flower block prints that are currently on view at Yu and Me Bookstore in Chinatown. On March 3rd, the seniors visited the Bookstore and were able to see their work proudly on display! CPC Chinatown Senior Center Older Adults Stay ActiveAt the CPC Chinatown Senior Center, older adults stay active by participating in a series of stimulating programs! Chinatown Senior Center is temporarily operating out of CPC's Central Office but continues to serve 180 hot meals to members daily and offer arts, health, and education programming to a limited number of members weekly. CPC serves thousands of older adult community members annually.CPC joined NYCCAL to Support Adult Literacy On February 28th, CPC joined New York City Coalition for Adult Literacy (NYCCAL) State Advocacy Day to restore $7.8 million for Adult Literacy Education (ALE) to keep our programs whole! We also called for $15.6 million to support the Adult Literacy Education Stabilization and Enhancement Fund. NYCCAL members, teachers, and students met with over 30 State Representatives to discuss the importance of free, accessible, adult education classes for immigrant and low-income community members. CPC Celebrates 57th Anniversary at 2022 Lunar New Year BenefitThanks to our supporter, partners, advocates, and friends for making our virtual benefit on March 10th a success! With your generous support, we have raised over $480,000, which will support essential services to over 125,000 community members and continue building relief, recovery, and resilience for Asian American, low-income and immigrant communities.CPC Speaks with FAQ NYC on Home Care Reform CPC President and CEO Wayne Ho joined hosts of FAQ NYC on March 23rd to discuss the New York State budget and legislative changes needed in order to provide critical, life-saving home care services to Medicaid patients. CPC Advocates for Fair Pay for Home Care on International Women's Day CPC joined home care workers, community members, advocates, and union leaders to advocate for Fair Pay for Home Care on International Women's Day. CPC continues to advocate for the pairing of the Fair Pay for Home Care with the Assembly Member Epstein / Senator Persuad Bill to end 24-hour shifts in order to better support both home care patients and workers. CPC Participates in the #JustPay Rally at City Hall On March 10th, the Human Services Council of New York organized a #JustPay rally at City Hall. Joined by over 1,500 human services workers, we called upon the State and City government to fund an annual COLA (cost of living adjustment), set a wage floor of $21/hr, and fund comprehensive wage and benefits schedule on all government contracts. CPC Rally with Workers for Excluded Workers Fund Expansion CPC staff have been hard at work enrolling community members in the Excluded Workers Fund, but the State's funding ran out before everyone who needed it could apply. On March 15th, we marched with workers of all kinds calling for a permanent fund. #ExcludedNoMore CPC Joined Council Member Carlina Rivera and the NYC Commission for Human Rights for its Day of Visibility! On March 22nd, CPC joined Council Member Carlina Rivera and the NYC Commission for Human Rights for its Day of Visibility at Madison Square Park. In response to recent anti-Asian violence in New York City, the goal was to engage New Yorkers with information on their rights and how to report hate crimes. CPC Joins #FairPay4HomeCare Press Conference in Albany Carlyn Cowen, CPC Chief Policy and Public Affairs Officer, joined over 100 advocates, organizations, workers, clients, and legislators at the #FairPay4HomeCare press conference in Albany on March 22nd. CPC Participates in the Announcement of Council Member Crystal Hudson's Resolution for Fair Pay for Home Care Thank you to Council Member Crystal Hudson for introducing a resolution in support of #FairPay4HomeCare! The resolution calls for increased minimum wages for home care aids through the funding and approval of the state's funding of the Fair Pay for Home Care act. The act also requires at least 150% of the minimum wage for home care aids, or other set minimum, and sets regional minimum rates of reimbursement under Medicaid and managed care plans. CPC Participates in the People's Plan Rally On March 18th, CPC joined over 100 organizations to introduce the People's Plan, a collective vision for New York city that provides dignity, care and justice for all New Yorkers! It offers the priorities of hundreds of organizers and advocates through a comprehensive multi-issue roadmap around housing, anti-criminalization, education, economy, climate, transit, and health. The intent of The People's Plan is to set the agenda for a racially and socially just city and provide a clear people-centered mandate for 2022 and beyond. CPC Joins Home Care Workers and Providers to Call for Gov. Hochul to Fully Fund Fair Pay for Home Care Act On March 18th, CPC joined home care workers and providers outside Gov. Kathy Hochul’s Manhattan office at the #Providers4FairPay rally to demand funding for the Fair Pay for Home Care Act be included in the final State budget. According to a recent Mercer labor analysis, New York State faces the worst home care shortage in the nation, and low wages are the single largest driving factor. The Fair Pay for Home Care Act would raise homecare wages to 150% of the minimum wage, making their hourly wages between $19.80 and $22.50. Upcoming Opportunities / Events
