Excellent value big winter reds Friday 15 July 2011

We're looking for all the red wine deal seekers out there who want some warming winter reds - these two have both scored Gold at the Decanter World Wine Awards.

Longview 2007 Devil's Elbow Cabernet Sauvignon - well-deserved big medal haul

Longview's red wines are reaping acclaim - delivering big reds for little prices - and earning serious awards from the prestigious global wine shows.

Longview Vineyard, in the cool Adelaide Hills, has one of the best-chosen vineyard sites in Australia, producing exceptional fruit for graceful cool climate wines.

The 2007 Devil’s Elbow Cabernet Sauvignon picked up Gold at the UK Decanter World Wine Awards in 2009, and has just scored a Gold at the San Francisco Wine Show - the number one wine show in the United States - making it four Gold medals for this wine since its release.

The show judges and reviewers have been forthright about this highly rated and respected wine:-

4 Gold medals: San Francisco International Wine Competition 2011, Royal Perth Wine Show 2010, Decanter World Wine Awards 2009, Tri Nations Wine Challenge.

Silver Medal Royal Adelaide Wine Show.

94 Points James Halliday.

94 Points Australia's Top 10 Cabernets Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine.

"A reliable producer focused on the regions around Adelaide, Longview has turned out a full-bodied, chewy, high-octane Cab that takes jammy cassis and chocolate syrup notes and leavens them with more elegant accents of cedar and tobacco. Drink 2012–2020."
90 Points Joe Czerwinski, Wine Enthusiast Magazine November 2009.

"Supple, generous and focused, with lovely currant, black pepper and thyme aromas and flavors that linger nicely on the refined finish. Drink now through 2013. 2,750 cases made."
Score: 87. —Harvey Steiman, Wine Spectator 2010.

At just $20.90 per bottle by the case, Devil's Elbow offers major pedigree for minor cost.

Paxton Vineyards 2009 AAA Shiraz Grenache

Paxton Vineyards, in McLaren Vale, is a five-star James Halliday winery, and also one of Australa's earliest and biggest biodynamic vineyards.

The 2009 AAA Shiraz Grenache has also just scored a Decanter Gold - and Decanter World Wine Awards Gold Medals are about as highly sought as any gong in the world wine industry: Decanter's tasting panel and review process has impeccable pedigree. The wines are assessed against not just Australian wine, but wines from all around the world.

Local reviewers were on to this wine ahead of Decanter:-

"This is an irresistibly slurpable, gentle wine built on vibrant fruit flavours and proven symbiosis of the shiraz-grenache blend. It's generously flavoured and ripe, as you'd expect from warm McLaren Vale. But there's nothing heavy, hot or overly tannic about it as we sometimes see from these warmer areas. David Paxton writes that it's a blend of five parcels of shiraz with three of grenache ultimately in a ratio of two-thirds shiraz to one-third grenache. The grenache  tempers the shiraz, adding fragrant high notes and an  attractive spiciness to the fuller earthy, savoury shiraz character."
Chris Shanahan, Top Drops, Sunday Canberra Times

"Spicy notes lift the dark berry fruit in this McLaren Vale red blend, with subdued oak and fine, soft tannins on the finish. It'll go with beef or game dishes or hearty beef-based casseroles. 90 Points"
Mike Frost, Courier Mail

"LOTS of reasonably priced Rhone red blends are arriving from France but quality isn't always what you hope. Australian variations on the recipe, such as Paxton AAA, are often a better bet. It smells of raspberries, plums, liquorice and spice, with a rustic, earthy edge. Medium-bodied, it has excellent texture, long flavour and a fine, soft finish. 90 Points"
Ralph Kyte-Powell, Epicure, The Age

"Impressive pure red fruits of grenache - raspberry especially; some darker plums too - make this an instantly alluring proposition. Shiraz delivers handy middle-palate flesh, and red fruits and plums roll playfully through the finish. Nicely balanced. 90 Points."
Nick Stock, The Age/The Sydney Morning Herald Good Wine Guide 2011
