A concept design for Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood Pool
 

Local rūnanga Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri have gifted a special name – Te Pou Toetoe – to Linwood’s new $22 million pool complex.

 

The much-anticipated community facility will formally be known as Te Pou Toetoe: Linwood Pool. Read more on Newsline.

 
 
 
Spatial plan maps out future of Lancaster Park
 
 

After a proud 130-year history of hosting sporting events at all levels, Lancaster Park is set to get a new lease of life as a community sports and recreation area.

 

Christchurch City Council staff, in collaboration with community and sporting groups, have prepared a spatial plan [PDF, 3 MB] for redeveloping the park so that it meets the community’s needs for more recreational areas and sports grounds. Read more on Newsline.

 

 
 
Safer speed limits in Woolston Village and Sumner Village
 

The Board has recommended to the Council a permanent change to the speed limits in both the Woolston and Sumner Villages. 

 

The review of the speed limits was highlighted by each community during the development of the Ferry Road and Sumner Village Centre Masterplans.

 

The staff report will be presented to the Council’s 12 September 2019 meeting for approval.

 
 
Redevelopment of Linwood College
 

Last month the Board received a report on the redevelopment of Linwood College. We'll hold a workshop with staff to discuss ideas for improving traffic and road safety, as well as ways to best engage the local community. We look forward to updating you on the outcome of this workshop.

 
 
 
An update on the Lyttelton Harbour Wastewater Project
 
Wastewater pipeline installation on Mauger Drive
 

The Heathcote Valley pipeline is on track with work scheduled to start on Port Hills Road in September. The team will be opening up Port Hills Road in 200-metre sections to install the wastewater pipeline, similar to this photo of work on nearby Mauger Drive, before closing the road up behind them and moving forwards. Christchurch City Council has endorsed a Global Settlement with the Crown.

The Global Settlement has been drawn-up to resolve aspects of the Cost Sharing Agreement that the Council and the Crown signed in 2013 and to establish a clear path forward. Read more on Newsline.

 
 
 
 
 

Greater Christchurch Regeneration Minister Megan Woods has approved an intergenerational plan for regenerating the red zone land along the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor. Key to the regeneration plan is the creation of a ‘Green Spine’ that will run either side of the Avon River and stretch 11km from the central city to New Brighton. Read more on Newsline.

 
 
 
 
 

The final push is onto complete the upgrade of Sumner Village. The work is part of the Sumner Village Master Plan and is designed to make the area more attractive and people-friendly. Read more on Newsline.

Getting shoppers into Christchurch’s city centre to experience some of the newest retail on offer in New Zealand will require a major marketing effort by Central City retailers. Read more on Newsline.

 
 
 

Work on the second stage of the Heathcote Expressway cycleway has finished a month ahead of schedule, impressing local businesses.

 

The new section of the cycle route, which will eventually link the suburbs of Ferrymead, Opawa and Woolston with the central city, starts at the intersection of Ferry Rd and Fitzgerald Ave and travels along Ferry Rd. It then crosses Moorhouse Ave and runs along Wilsons Rd before turning left into Charles St.

 

The Heathcote Expressway is part of a network of major cycleways the Council is building to encourage more people to travel by bike. Read more on Newsline.

 
 
 
 


Hundreds of messages and mementoes left as tributes following the 15 March mosque attacks will be displayed at Christchurch Art Gallery on the six-month anniversary of the tragedy.

 

Tributes of Aroha will be open to the public from 5.30pm on Friday 13 September and during the weekend of 14 and 15 September. It will highlight the outpouring of sympathy and support from the local and international community following the shootings at Christchurch’s Al Noor and Linwood Mosques.

The festival starts from 28 September until 13 October with the booklet and website bookings going live to the public from 19 August via our Libraries and service centres.

 

The festival offers walks of all ages, abilities and levels – from hill hikes through to leisurely strolls. Many of the walks are accessible for wheelchair users or budding young walkers in buggies.

 

Our feature walks in this year’s programme include: Dogs Day Out in the Zone on 29 September, Gruffalo Explorers on 2 October, The Generation Game – Travis Wetland 6 October, Pukeko Stomp 8 October and Adventure on Te Ara Ihutai Christchurch Coastal Pathway on 13 October.  All walk details are available online here.

 
 
Story of Steam Wharf Stream

Celebrate World Rivers Day with stories about inanga (whitebait) and this unique and special stream by an ecologist.

About 45 tonnes of soft plastics are ending up at Christchurch’s EcoSort recycling plant each month because people mistakenly believe they will be recycled. Watch the video or read more on Newsline.

 
 
 
Community Funding
 

In the last month, the Board granted the following:

 

$359,550‬ to 46 community groups and organisations from its Strengthening Communities Fund to strengthen community wellbeing throughout Linwood-Central-Heathcote.


Funding of $12,100 for eight groups from its Youth Development Fund, including a grant of $500 for a young person wishing to compete in the ISA World Junior Surfing Competition in October.


$10,500 for three projects from its Discretionary Response Fund.
