Click here Barnard College Update - Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2016Dear Claremont resident: As November begins, we are excited to share that in just a few weeks we’ll start seeing the new teaching and learning center rise into the New York sky. In early December, our construction team will start erecting the steel beams on the portion of the building that rises above the foundation – also known as the superstructure. This work will be done in two phases: Superstructure-I, when the five stories that span the full footprint of the building will be constructed; and Superstructure-II when we’ll finish the remaining six floors of the 11-story tower. The crawler crane that we’ll use to build the superstructure is tentatively scheduled to arrive on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 3-4. We expect that Claremont Avenue will have limited traffic and parking that weekend, but we are still awaiting the final delivery and set-up schedule. We hope to share the final details including street closures in our November 16th update. TLC Rising To celebrate the start of the superstructure phase and provide information on the logistics, we will hold TLC Rising on Tuesday, Dec. 6, from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on the Barnard campus. Details of the celebration are still being finalized, but suffice it to say, there will be fun, snacks, and giveaways! Look for details in the next update. Construction Updates and Schedule We have had a few people ask about hearing a noise from the construction site that sounds like an air horn. The short blasts from these horns – one of the industry’s best practices for construction safety – are used to alert workers when equipment is coming onto the site or being moved within the site via overhead means. You’ll continue periodically hearing these horns during the superstructure phases. In addition, as we mentioned in our last update, there will be a few weeks this month when we will be using jackhammers on the site to excavate a trench for utilities. The noise will be intermittent and will not be as loud as the excavation work this summer. We will send an update when the dates for this work are finalized. Our schedule continues to be weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. It’s possible we may add two Saturdays to our schedule this month, including November 12 and 19 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The work would not involve drilling of any kind and there wouldn’t be any concrete truck deliveries during these Saturday work days.
