State Tourism Plan

The South Australian Tourism Plan 2020 has been released.

With tourism recognised as one of Australia's "super-growth" industries and a key driver of the South Australian economy, this is a very important document for South Australia. It represents a potential $250 million in government expenditure (not factoring in any budget cuts) to support and develop the South Australian tourism sector over the next 5 years.

SATIC did provide an official submission in response to the draft Plan, based on member feedback, asking for:

  • A whole of government approach.
  • Improvement to the tourism business environment.
  • Alignment with the National Tourism 2020 Strategy.
  • Support for SATIC's existing programs & services.

Tourism Barometer

In the June quarter 2014 SATIC Tourism Barometer the business activity index fell by 9% from 129 to 118 points while the short term business outlook index fell by 17%.

It was felt that consumer sentiment had been impacted by the budget austerity measures and other negatives for the economy such as the pending closure of GM Holden.

The international market has been a bright spot supported by increases in the supply of seats through Adelaide following the commencement of Air Asia X and Jetstar’s international services.
