CAPSTONE The Newsletter of the CQL | The Council on Quality and Leadership

January 2013

CQL is all about people ...

A Word from Cathy Ficker Terrill, President and CEO

I stepped into the leadership role of President and CEO of CQL on January 1.  It has been an exciting first few weeks of transition.  In this issue of the Capstone, we put the spotlight on people and partners.

Wallara, a CQL accredited organization in Melbourne, Australia has produced a video entitled “Three Letters that Changed Wallara – CQL.” I encourage you to view this powerful video. This video is a nice overview of the personal outcome measures and puts into perspective the work of organization leaders and direct support providers that change the lives of the individuals that they support.

CQL employees that work with organizations, systems and networks, are the heart of CQL.  They are committed to the mission and values of CQL and bring those values to the work they do every day.  In this issue, Capstone celebrates two valued employees celebrating 10 years with CQL. Beth Mathis, Associate Vice President for Network Development and Kate McClain, Quality Enhancement Specialist.

The CQL Board of Directors is made up of committed leaders with wide ranging expertise.  These dedicated national leaders help to set the vision for this organization.  CQL is pleased that Wanda Seiler has transitioned to become the Chairperson of the Board of Directors.  As we move forward Wanda and I will be working closely together toward the continuing success of CQL Person-centered Accreditation, Training and Certification.

Speaking of the Board of Directors, I want to publicly thank Dr. Deborah Spitalnik, Executive Director, The Elizabeth M. Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities, for her leadership as Chairperson of the CQL Board in 2012. Deborah provided exquisite leadership to CQL through a year of transition.  In addition to serving as Board Chairperson, Deborah also chaired the CEO Search Committee and worked closely with the Board of Directors and staff to ensure a smooth transition.

It is with great appreciation that I also thank Nancy Thaler, Executive Director of NASDDDS and Dr. David Mank, Director, Indiana Institute on Disability and Community, for their years of service on the board.  New to the board this year is Joanna Pierson, Executive Director of the Arc of Frederick County, Maryland, representing AAIDD.  The contributions from the CQL member organizations -- AAIDD, ANCOR, Autism Society of America, Mosaic, National Association of QDDP’s (NAQ), The Arc of the United States, and United Cerebral Palsy -- is essential and very much appreciated.

In this year of celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Personal Outcome Measures®, we will be sharing personal stories and videos each month. I have a personal connection and a long history with the CQL organization and the Personal Outcome Measures®.  More than twenty years ago, when I was the Director of the Illinois Developmental Disabilities Council, the DD Council provided the seed money and resources to support the development of the Personal Outcome Measures®.  As the CEO of the Ray Graham Association, we had the distinct honor of being the first organization to be accredited with both the Quality Measures 2005® and the Person-centered Excellence Accreditation.

I look forward to 2013 and the many opportunities for CQL to continue the tradition of using outcome measures and metrics for people across all types of services and supports.  During this first year, it is my hope to visit many CQL partners.  I welcome the opportunity to speak at conferences, attend meetings and expand our partnerships.  You can contact me at cfterrill@thecouncil.org.
