Brewer Header

Hi and welcome to the latest newsletter.  The big news for me is that Spring has arrived!!!  I hate winter and am looking forward to a long hot summer, as will a lot of poeple around Brisbane this year!  If you are a beer brewer, get cracking while the temperature is still not too hot, and then relax through summer enjoying the fruits of your labours.

We are well advanced now with planning of the the Queensland Homebrewing Conference, and you can find out a heap of details on the website (www.theqhc.com.au).  It's been designed so that brewers of all standards will get something out of the day (besides loads of great tasting beer).  Block out the weekend and join us for a great time.

There are no new products this month (though we are preparing some), but the office is littered with our attempts at making an American Honey Bourbon liqueur - if you like a nice liqueur, give this one a go.

Have a great month and get ready for an excellent summer.  Cheers   David

September Promotions

Brewers Choice has a great deal for brewers for September.

To celebrate the addition of a Pilsener, Irish Stout, IPA & Wheat beer to our Thomas Coopers Selection range (To view their Product Profiles click here); when you buy any Thomas Coopers tin, you will receive a packet of Brew Cellar Carbonation Drops FREE!

Give these kits a go - they're made in Australia, not overseas and are fresher and better tasting.  James, at Wacol, has been drinking the Bitter lately and reckons it's a very drinkable session beer!

For spirit drinkers, we had a deal on the Willards Pre-mixers for this month - Buy 3 and get a set of whiskey glasses FREE.  Unfortunately, we have given nearly all of them away, in just the first 5 days!!.  There may be a few left at your store, so get down there soon and see whether there are any left.

Staff Profile - Tony

Name:Tony Jacobs
Position: Manager Chapel Hill
Star Sign: Cancer
What do you love about your job? Talking to customers about how to get the best from our great products and having them come back to tell me how happy they were with the end result
Favourite Brew: A crisp well hopped Little Creatures Pale Ale or Czech Black Lager Cerny Pivo - nothing like it. Drinking spirits, would have to be Jim Beam Black Label Bourbon
What are you doing when you’re not at work? Living on acreage means there is always a long list of things to do that I never seem to finish - I just keep adding to the list. Gardening, house, property and garden maintenance, machinery maintenance. I love to entertain and enjoy cooking for family and friends. I have ventured into making small goods and of course brewing which is pretty well a necessity. My other interests include Boating (cruising), Shooting and Motor racing
If you were a beer, which one would you be? Why? Cerny Pivo - not translucent, a little dark, great taste, complex with a great finish.
Most embarrassing moment: Just commenced work at Brewers Choice, and in the process of working up a great Bourbon recipe with my son, for some obscure reason fell over and broke 4 ribs, spending 9 days in hospital
Favourite quote: Life is too short to drink inferior booze, make the best you possibly can.

Don't Be Everyone's Pudgy, Red Headed Mate

Hahn, Powers, Tooheys, XXXX, VB, Cascade, Carlton...The list of Australian commercial beer, although seemingly endless, is at its core, the same product with an array of different names and pictures on its packaging. Sure, we can all identify their brand messages on TV or passing by their billboards, and yes, they are funny. But then you taste what's inside the bottle and if done without that label as identification, the average punter would be hard stretched to identify which thin, yellow liquid belonged to which funny advertisement. That's the cue for consumers to stop laughing....Expand

Annual John Collins Rum Competition

On Saturday, 28 August, the Yamanto store held our Annual John Collins Rum Competition in memory of one of our previous Managers - John Collins.  Saturday was a bad day for it – rain and a cold wind whistling through the store.  Not daunted by this, we set up the entries and invited our customers to partake of a refreshing nip of rum (actually several nips of rum) and tell us which they thought was the best. Some of the participants stopped by and wanted to know which was theirs, but sanity prevailed and the whole competition was conducted as a ‘Blind Test’.

After due consideration, tasting and counting the tasting slips, Allan Pitter was declared the winner.  A  Highly Commended was given to Evan McCosh who ran a close second.  All entries were of an exceptionally high standard - verified by yours truly, who had to get his Missus over to drive him home after work (Well, somebody had to try them all and clean up).

Congratulations goes to Allan, he received a $50.00 Brewers Choice gift voucher for his efforts.  I hope his good work will continue on to next year, when I hopefully get another taste.

Recipe - Honey Bourbon

This delicious Honey Bourbon recipe has been developed and tested by Brewers Choice employees James & Shantel.

This is an unexpectedly smooth Bourbon-based liqueur. It has a warm honey taste & is versatile and delicious chilled, straight, or in cocktails. A deep golden hue, it has a nose of ripe citrus and an exceptionally smooth palate of sweet honey, vanilla and caramel with subtle bourbon notes and a long, rich finish. This is perfectly suited for after-dinner consumption.

Well.... that's what the commercial marketing blurb says anyway, and I reckon you'll find Shantel and James' recipe is just as satisfying!
