Catherine & Alix Roque - Natural Wine Duo

Catherine and Alix Roque, mother and daughter, are a truly dynamic duo. Both are staunch ambassadors for minimal intervention wines and show ultimate respect for their surrounding nature and terroir. The result is a range of elegant, natural wines with personality.

In March Catherine showed wines from Domaine de Clovallon and Mas d’Alezon at RAW Wine Fair in London where the wines from both domaines were very well-received.

Domaine de Clovallon

Back in the late 80s architect Catherine Roque bought a house with vines and orchards on the edge of Faugères, one of the finest appellations in Southern France. At this time the area was considered too cold and northerly for appellation status. Catherine used this to her advantage by planting non-appellation grape varieties – Pinot Noir, Clairette, Riesling, Petit Manseng – and from these varieties she produced excellent IGP wines.

Catherine’s daughter Alix has now taken over the pruning shears having studied oenology and working with winemakers all over the world. Young and dynamic, she works closely with nature and the ecosystem to experiment with grape varieties and blends to produce an exciting range of cuvées.

Les Aires, made from 100% Viognier and similar in style to wines from Condrieu, is a fine and delicate wine showing peach, pear and citrus on the nose leading to a creamy, delicate and complex palate. It matches superbly with Thai inspired dishes.

Les Aurièges is a complex blend of seven white grapes, the most important being Chardonnay, Petit Manseng and Riesling but also included are Viognier, Roussanne, Clairette and Petite Arvine (a variety native to the Valais in Switzerland). This wine combines fruit and rich complexity with the acidic bite absent in many white Languedoc wines. It holds its own with substantial dishes including foie gras and seafood with sauces.

Alix’s young vine Pinot Noir is an intensely fruity wine with juicy, ripe tannins and beautiful balance. This is by far the best example of a Pinot Noir we’ve found in the Languedoc.

Les Pomarèdes is made from 100% Pinot Noir from ancient vines and has a complex nose with red fruit, spice and an equally complex and perfumed palate with morello cherries, spice and cocoa. An unusual and stunning example of Pinot Noir from the Languedoc.

Palagret is a blend of Pinot Noir and Syrah which is unconventional and works remarkably well. The blend of Syrah with its tannic structure and the finesse of the Pinot Noir makes for an extremely elegant wine which will compliment all kinds of dishes. Cherry and raspberry fruit on the nose give way to a rounded palate of red fruit and spice.

Mas d’Alezon

Catherine Roque bought her 'forgotten' Faugères vineyards, some of the highest in the appellation, several years after having established Domaine de Clovallon. In contrast to the almost adjacent vineyards of Domaine de Clovallon the terroir here is schistous and produces appellation controllée Faugères wines including a remarkable Faugères Blanc.

As well as her red and white Faugères cuvées, Catherine produces a biodynamic Fine de Faugères from double distilled Carignan which is a delightful and smooth eau de vie with hints of raisin and garrigue - the perfect digestif.

White Faugères is rare and Catherine’s Cabretta is a truly unique example. With the perfect balance of minerality, fruit and touches of nut and honey, this wine is complex and elegant. Despite being a blend of Clairette and Roussanne it is reminiscent of a Chenin from the Loire and will age extremely well. Pure nectar.

Le Presbytère is a blend of 80% Lledoner Pelut (a form of Grenache) with the remainder made up of Syrah and Mourvèdre. This is a silky and extremely approachable wine and yet not lacking in structure. Moreishly supple, dark fruit on the palate is accompanied by smooth tannins and a deeply mineral, savoury finish.

Montfalette is a blend of 80% Mourvèdre with Syrah and Grenache. This is perhaps the more typically Faugères cuvée of the two. It’s complex and elegant with silky tannins and notes of cocoa, black fruits, spice and liquorice. Perfect with a leg of lamb.

With so many delicious, natural wines to choose from in this selection we recommend you try a mixed case which shows the full range beautifully...
