Hi there,

You know how sometimes you have to tell a child to do something a million times before it actually gets done? Sometimes it feels just the same when industry is dealing with government.

Latest case in point is the startup sector, which is feeling ignored and deprioritised, not to mention disadvantaged by policies such as the Research and Development Tax Incentive, which could see spending cut by $1.8 billion and introduce a $4 million cap for smaller firms accessing the scheme – likely reducing the tax offset for most startups.

The Australian tech startup sector is a force multiplier for jobs and makes up six percent of GDP – with the potential to be much higher.

Now the industry is rallying, with big names including Atlassian, Airwallex, Canva, Freelancer and StartupAUS among those penning an open letter calling for better engagement between state and startup to help aid recovery of the sector.

While the pandemic has brought hard times to the sector, just like it has to most, the authors believe with support, the tech sector will be key to a strong and enduring Australian economic recovery, driven by innovation and technology.

If that doesn’t work, perhaps it might be time to start throwing a tanty…

Tech guides businesses through covid

If there’s been an overarching positive to the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s the role technology is playing to mitigate the impact of a recession and set businesses up for a competitive advantage post-recession.

Covid creates incentive to rethink the path ahead, Gluckman says…

Lack of digital leadership

Former chief science advisor Sir Peter Gluckman has called out successive NZ govts for a lack of leadership and support for digital and education – areas critical for the weightless economy that could lift us out of the Covid doldrums.

“Building this asset will require new strategies and much more than the rather limited efforts made by successive governments.”
