Red fobbers are Modo pioneers

what a year!

October marks a new fiscal year for Modo, a great time to reflect on some of our big accomplishments last year.

We helped found the international CarSharing Association and the Federation of Canadian Carsharing Co-ops. We were an advising member of the City of Vancouver’s 2040 Transportation Plan and we worked with the Sustainable Transportation Coalition to advocate for long-term transit funding. We strengthened our relationships among fellow co-ops by working closely with the BC Co-operative Association and providing support and advice to co-ops starting up. We launched our new brand, Modo, in the spring and brought carsharing to a broader group of people who don’t need to own a vehicle. Because of our membership growth we were able to purchase new vehicles for both replacement and expansion. And to cap off the year we launched our much-anticipated mobile site, which now accounts for about 20% of all member bookings.

Moving into our 15th year in business, we’re excited to celebrate UN’s International Year of Cooperatives in 2012 by continuing to build on our achievements. Please join us for the ride! Facebook Like Button

fleet news - one year anniversary of keys in vehicles

About a year ago, we sealed up the lock boxes and secured keys in our cars. We made this change based on a lot of feedback: members sometimes didn’t feel safe or comfortable fiddling around with the lock box, especially when it’s dark or wet out.

We’re now happy to report a virtual elimination of costs associated with lost vehicle keys including staff administration time and towing charges to car dealers. We’ve also heard from many members that this change has vastly improved the carsharing experience.

What to do with the old lock box key? Recycle it!

modo tips

  • Is it stickered? Our fleet inspectors use clear stickers (approximately the size of a quarter) to mark noted damage. That means that we will address the damage in due course. No need to report stickered dings or dents.
  • Can’t start? Our fob readers can be sensitive sometimes and register more than one fob event. This would engage, then disengage, the engine – making it impossible for you to start the ignition. If you find yourself in this situation, hold your fob up to the reader again (you can do this directly from the driver’s seat!). Always wait at least 60 seconds between fob events to allow fob messages to be sent and received. If the ignition still won’t engage, double check your booking confirmation and phone Modo for assistance.

snow tires

Last winter, we updated our policy with respect to snow tires. After consulting a fleet service provider, we determined that the cost of swapping tires on vehicles each season far outweighed the incremental reduction in tire life by keeping snow tires on all the time.

Snow tires are available on about 10% of our fleet year round. When booking a vehicle, you can add 'snow tires' to the ‘Required Features’ search filter to nab something suitable for your snowy trip. Facebook Like Button

annual modo member survey

We get some incredible feedback and suggestions from our members: we love it because it shows that you’re thinking about carsharing and ways to make it better and more accessible for more people.

Here’s another way to let us know how we’re doing and how we can improve. Our annual member survey asks you to tell us about the carsharing service we’re providing, as well as your opinion about the work we do in our community. If you can spare about 15 minutes of your time, your feedback will help us to move in the right direction. This survey will be open from now until November 30th. Thank you! Tweet Button
