Apprenticeships growth seen across England, but more needed

Data released today by the National Apprenticeship Service shows that volume of apprenticeships and demand for the roles are growing significantly, also confirming their prevalence in white-collar and professional jobs, rather than in the blue-collar positions they are more traditionally associated with.

The service’s data shows that just over 1.4m online applications were made for apprenticeship vacancies in England in the past 12 months, up by just under a third (32%) on the previous academic year. With the average online vacancy now attracting 11 applications, albeit a much lower rate than for many graduate-level recruitment programmes, the government is urging more employers to consider how hiring an apprentice could benefit their business.

University of Brighton and Santander offer funded places for graduate internships

The University of Brighton is delighted to announce that Santander Universities will be part-funding graduate internship opportunities locally. The national scheme, which is a partnership with over 60 universities including the University of Brighton, will create a fantastic opportunity for twenty five local businesses to take on a skilled graduate for three months.

The programme is open to small-to-medium-enterprises with less than 250 employees and with a turnover of less than £50m. Santander UK is keen that the companies should be local to the participating university. Those offering the best experience for the student and the capacity to recruit full time will get first refusal.

‘Untold Stories’ bring the work of Sussex charities to life – and give students valuable work experience.

A collaboration between Miranda Birch Media and the University of Sussex, is giving local charities the opportunity to promote themselves and students the chance to use their media skills.

The “Untold Stories” project is supervised by Miranda Birch and funded by the University’s School of Media, Film and Music.  MA students interview charity volunteers and those they support and turn their first-hand accounts into audio podcasts.

Through these interviews, the charities get a taste of working with the media, the students gain practical experience and both can use the podcast to promote what they do to potential volunteers, funding bodies or employers.
