The political philosopher, Professor Charles Taylor (Quebec & Balliol 1952) has been awarded an honorary degree from Oxford at the annual Encaenia ceremony last week. READ MORE.

Oxford also recently honoured Senator J. William Fulbright (Arkansas & Pembroke 1925) with the second annual Oxford Fulbright Distinguished Lecture in International Relations given by Ambassador Thomas Pickering on 'The decade ahead - the U.S. role in the world'. READ MORE.

110th anniversary celebrations

South African schools Scholarships

The Rhodes Scholarships for former students from particular schools in South Africa are now also open to former students of identified partner schools. This means all Rhodes Scholarships around the world are open to women as well as men. READ MORE.

Olympic Fever

There is an impressive list of Rhodes Scholars who have competed in the Olympic Games, the first of which took part in the 1908 London Olympics. READ MORE.

Global Scholars Symposium

Rhodes House recently hosted the Global Scholars Symposium 2012, which brought together Scholars from a number of prestigious postgraduate international scholarships programmes in order to 'Think Global'. A large contingent of Rhodes Scholars attended, and they were actively involved in its organisation. Over 51 countries were represented and it had a strong inter-disciplinary focus. READ MORE.

Dr Robin Fletcher, Warden of Rhodes House, 1980-89, and Lady (Gill) Williams, whose husband Sir Edgar Williams was Warden from 1952 to 1980, have both recently celebrated their 90th birthdays. Many congratulations from Rhodes House! READ MORE.

Scholars swimming the Channel

Six Rhodes Scholars from the class of 2011 will attempt to swim the English Channel crossing from Dover to Calais (21 miles / 34 kilometres) in the first week of October 2012. They are seeking a sponsor to underwrite the cost of the swim which will total £3,300. Each of the team members will then work to raise at least £1,000 for the charity WaterAid. PAUL CADARIO (Ontario & Magdalen 1973), Distinguished Senior Fellow in Global Innovation at the University of Toronto.

RACHEL CARRELL (New Zealand & Balliol 2002), Chief Executive of DrThom, an online healthcare company.

RANJIT CHAUDHURY (India & Lincoln 1955), honoured with the 'Vishisht Bihari Samman' in a special ceremony which recognised the achievements of eminent Biharis.

RICHARD CHIN (Kansas & St John's 1988), elected to ImmunoCellular Therapeutics' Board of Directors.

DAVID COLEMAN (Vermont & University College 1991), President of the College Board, a US membership organisation of schools and colleges.

JERRY ELLIS (Western Australia & Brasenose 1959), appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to business and commerce.

SANDRA FREDMAN (South Africa-at-Large & Wadham 1979), who has been made Honorary Queen's Counsel.

DAVID GOLDBLOOM (Nova Scotia & Exeter 1975), Chair of the Board of Directors for the Mental Health Commission of Canada.

ANTONIO GOTTO (Tennessee & Worcester 1957), awarded the 24th Annual Robert J. and Claire Pasarow Foundation Award in Cardiovascular Research.

CHRISTOPH LOENARZ (Germany & Merton 2007), awarded an Early Career Fellowship (ECF) by the Leverhulme Trust.

RICHARD LUGAR (Indiana & Pembroke 1954), awarded the Mandela Freedom Statuette for his contribution towards a 'non-racial, free and democratic South Africa'.

PAUL MARKOVICH (North Dakota & University College 1989), President and CEO of California Blue Shield.

RICHARD PFAFF (Kansas & Magdalen 1957), awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree by the General Theological Seminary in New York, and his book The Liturgy in Medieval England: a History (Cambridge University Press, 2009) was awarded the Haskins Medal.

DAMON IEREMIA SALESA (New Zealand & Oriel 1997), Associate Professor of Pacific Studies at the University of Auckland.

STEPHEN VASCIANNIE (Jamaica & Balliol 1981), Jamaican Ambassador to the United States.

MATT WENHAM (Australia-at-Large & St John's 2005), Associate Director at the Institute on Science for Global Policy in Washington, DC.

Recent books by Rhodes Scholars

Motivation and Narrative in Herodotus, by Emily Baragwanath (New Zealand & Magdalen 2001), illustrates and analyses Herodotus's techniques for representing motivation over a wide selection of his narratives.

We Can All Do Better, by Bill Bradley (Missouri & Worcester 1965), offers a personal review of the current state of America, in which the role of money and politics is scrutinised.

China Airborne, by James Fallows (California & Queen's 1970), examines the phenomenon that more than two-thirds of the new airports under construction today are being built in China.

French Kids Eat Everything, by Karen Le Billion (nee Bakker) (Ontario & St John's 1995), considers from a very personal perspective the wisdom in the 'food rules' that help the French foster healthy eating habits and good manners in children.

Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power, by Rachel Maddow (California & Lincoln 1995), examines the changes which have occurred in America and the effects they have had on attitudes towards warfare.

What Money Can’t Buy; The moral limits of markets, by Michael Sandel (Massachusetts & Balliol 1975), considers a significant ethical question regarding the proper role of markets in a democratic society.

How Great Women Lead, by Bonnie St. John (California & Trinity 1986), and her daughter Darcy Deane, explores the qualities that motivate some of the world's most powerful women.

The Kissing List, by Stephanie Reents (Idaho & Mansfield 1992), a debut novel which follows a group of young women in Oxford and New York.

Between God & Green: How Evangelicals Are Cultivating a Middle Ground on Climate Change by Katharine K. Wilkinson (Tennessee & Trinity 2006), explores the faith-based efforts which are emerging and strengthening to address the problem of climate change.

Memorials

Two much-missed members of the Rhodes community have recently been remembered at memorial services in Oxford:

Dr David Hatendi (Rhodesia & University College 1977) (22 May 1953 - 12 March 2012), worked at the World Bank, and in finance in Africa. He was Zimbabwe's first black Rhodes Scholar, and National Secretary to the Rhodes Trust for Zimbabwe. READ MORE.

Sir Zelman Cowen (Victoria & New College 1941) (7 October 1919 - 8 December 2011), was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of New England (1967-70) and of the University of Queensland (1970-77), Governor-General of Australia (1977-82), and Provost of Oriel College, Oxford from 1982 to 1990.
