Australian film makers are well represented with 10 movies at BOFA 2015. Here are three of the best.....

ANOTHER COUNTRY
ANOTHER COUNTRY

David Gulpilil was one of the hits of BOFA 2014 in Rolf de Heer’s moving Charlie’s Country. The iconic indigenous Australian actor is back this year in the deeply personal Another Country, directed by Molly Reynolds. Gulpilil takes us on an extraordinary journey into his Arnhem Land homeland as he explains “what happened to my culture when it was interrupted by your culture”. It's Gulpilil who gives the film its authority, taking personal ownership of the narration as he points out  that the task of constructing a new Indigenous society from the ruins of the old is not something that can happen overnight, or even within a single generation.

TYKE, ELEPHANT OUTLAW
TYKE, ELEPHANT OUTLAW

One of the most powerful films ever made about animal rights, Tyke, Elephant Outlaw tells the extraordinary story of Tyke, a young circus elephant in Honolulu who went on a rampage in 1994, killing her trainer and running amok through the city before being shot down. All of this was captured on film. Directors Susan Lambert and Stefan Moore intersperse the footage with interviews with her trainers and handlers and eye witnesses to the event, raising fundamental questions about our relationships with animals and our duty of care for them. Emotionally gripping and wonderfully effective story telling.  If you care about animal rights, see this film!

THE FILM’S PRODUCER, MEGAN MCMURCHY, WILL CONDUCT A Q & A AFTER THE SCREENING

LITTLE STARS
LITTLE STARS

Moonshine Movies’ Little Stars is a film that comes with a warning – it’ll probably change your life. Little Stars tells the story of a handful of seriously ill young people putting their limitations to one side to achieve the best they can with their lives. Longford-based director and producer Mike Hill said the fact that the film’s subjects lived in different continents outlined how universal it was for those living with serious illnesses to face life with a can-do attitude. It’s a topic that many find confronting , but Mike Hill’s film is moving, inspiring and life affirming. You’ll be surprised and rewarded by the wisdom that these young people and their parents have to share with us all. Mike Hill hopes that his film will open the conversation about palliative care for children in Tasmania, and you can meet and chat with the film maker in the Festival Lounge after the screening.

TWO SPECIAL BOFA EVENTS

TWO SPECIAL BOFA EVENTS

A NEPAL FUNDRAISER- SHERPAS- THE TRUE HEROES OF MOUNT EVEREST

This is the first Everest doco to show a Himalayan expedition from the point of view of the ever smiling Sherpas who make the whole adventure possible.  Throughout the film the Sherpas share their stories, feelings and fears as they take a Swiss expedition to the peak of Everest. The stunning footage makes it almost feel like you are there yourself on the South Col or on the icy cliffs of the Lhotse Face, dangling by a rope. This extraordinary film puts a human face to the men who often risk their lives for their Western clients.

FUNDS RAISED FROM THIS SCREENING WILL BE DONATED TO SUPPORT VICTIMS OF THE NEPAL EARTHQUAKE.

IRIS

This is a film about a very stylish lady, so BOFA invites you to be a bit outrageous and, just like Iris, dress up, see the movie and enjoy bubbles and brioche in the Festival Lounge after the screening.  The 93 year old Iris Apfel  has been a commanding presence on the New York fashion scene for decades, and is a character you’ll never forget.
