Colour in the Shadows

The dance of light which calls in the distance of a forest path may be the first thing that catches an artist’s eye...yet it is in the darks and shadows that beautiful colour can emerge and inspire us.

As I work with colour play on natural subjects from the West Coast it surprises me to actually see vivid colour in the landscape, especially where there is less light. The reflections that happen are anything but dull, and I tried to capture them in these new plein air paintings.

"Panorama Trail" on the Sea to Sky Gondola (before it closed) was so alive with colour on that bright summer day that it invited me to sit with it for a while. This shady spot was also a much appreciated rest stop from preparing and lugging art supplies to the mountain.

The "Sky Pilot Mountains," that I also painted that day, had dramatic contrasts calling for strong expression, but it was the shadows of the forest that first intriqued me and their tones were what became animated. If you sit long enough in the shade and open your eyes you will see the colours in the shadows.

Please come and enjoy such expressions of colour and other wonderful paintings at the NEXT FCA SHOW:
