May 2010

Welcome to our Autumn Newsletter,

This newsletter coincides with “Compost Awareness Week”. This is a week that the industry focuses on promoting compost both as a valuable resource, and as a means to increase the amount of organics diverted from landfill.

As part of compost week Soilco is participating with our compost partners including Wollongong City Council to raise awareness for the end use of compost. This will include a compost giveaway of 100m3 to local residents.

A field day showcasing our compost spreading and cultivation services for agricultural use has been organised for later this month. Please contact us for more details.

Land Rehabilitation

Land Rehabilitation

Over the past few months Soilco has been involved in a number of Land Rehabilitation projects involving the amelioration of site soil. The scope of works for these projects have included:

• Soil Testing
• Screening Site Soil
• Soil Amendment
• Supply/ Deliver of additional material
• Spreading of amended site soil
• Application of additional products including – compost/ fertiliser/ seed mixes.
• Cultivation

Soilco has recently aquired a new cultivator to add to our range of equipment available for land rehabilitation purposes. The KE rotary harrow is superbly suited for soil tillage on pre-cultivated soils. The strong frame, one piece rotor head, shaft and sprung tine fixing result in a very robust implement. The large clearance above the rotor heads ensures the free passage of large amount of straw or clods of soil. The following levelling bar & roller breaks clods and reconsolidates the soil resulting in a fine, even bed.

Product Showcase - Hort Mulch

Product Showcase - Hort Mulch

Hort Mulch is a budget composted mulch. Screened through a 15 -30mm screen, it is a long lasting woody mulch, suitable for large scale environmental, agricultural and commercial applications. Due to the chunky sizing it is particularly suited to general plantings where wind is a factor.

We are currently looking at reducing our stockpile of this product, so if you have a project that you think Hort Mulch may suit, call us for pricing.

Permaculture Partners

Permaculture Partners

Soilco has recently been invited to join Permaculture Partners as a sponsor. Permaculture Partners is an environmental education program that has been operating in local Warrawong primary schools since 2003.

The garden design is based on Permaculture principles that balance food production, biodiversity and sustainable natural resource management. It is an interactive environment that harvests water and processes school’s organic wastes into compost – building soil fertility and sustaining garden productivity.

Warrawong High School is about to undergo construction on a 1100m2 garden – incorporating crops and fruit trees as well as a sensory herb labyrinth. Two classroom areas are included into the design, providing the children with a stimulating outdoor learning area that is integrated into all Key Learning Areas from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Soilco will be assisting through the supply of the organic growing media and mulches.

If you are interested in this program and would like to receive more information please contact the Community Liason Officer – Janelle Mowbray JANELLE.MOWBRAY@det.nsw.edu.au
