Research Update

Good afternoon,

Linked below is the Beer Institute’s August 2017 Import-Export Report, which is based on information reported by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Below are some of the report's highlights:

Imports

  • Imported beer volume increased by 19.4% in August, by far the largest percentage increase in import volume of any month so far in 2017.
  • Imports are now up 3.7% year-to-date through August and up 4.7% over the last 12 months.
  • Mexican import volume increased by more than 30% in August. Imports from Mexico are now up 5.7% year-to-date.
  • Dutch beer imports increased by 1.6% in August but remained down slightly year-to-date.
  • Imports from Germany and Belgium (which should be analyzed together due to transshipping between these countries) grew in August, reversing a four month declining trend. Imports from these countries are now jointly up 0.5% over the last 12 months.
  • Both cider and NA beer imports grew in August but remain down year-to-date.

Exports

  • The volume of beer exported from the U.S. increased by nearly 50% in August. About 75% of that growth went to Mexico, and another 32% was split between Chile and Paraguay.
  • U.S. beer exports have more than doubled so far in 2017 and are likely to top one million barrels during calendar 2017.
  • Beer exports to Europe and Asia are also growing fast, with each up double digits year-to-date.
  • Total exports are now up 21% year-to-date and more than 13% over the last 12 months.
  • Cider exports are now roughly flat year-to-date while the volume of NA beer exported from the U.S. year-to-date through August is over four times the volume exported through this time in 2016.
