THE WEEK AHEAD at the UN SECURITY COUNCIL

10-14  September 2018

Dear Colleague,

On Monday (10 September), a briefing on corruption and conflict is expected to be held under the agenda item “Maintenance of International Peace and Security”. UN Secretary-General António Guterres and John Prendergast, Founding Director of the Enough Project and Co-Founder of The Sentry, are the anticipated briefers.

Also on Monday, an Arria-formula meeting will be held on Venezuela. The briefers are expected to be Mercedes de Freitas, the Executive Director of Transparencia Venezuela, and Marshall Billingslea, the US Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorist Financing.

A debate on peacekeeping reform is planned for Wednesday (12 September). Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix and Sarah Blakemore, the CEO of Keeping Children Safe, are expected to brief.

On Thursday (13 September), the Council is expected to adopt resolutions renewing the mandates of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and the UN Verification Mission in Colombia.

There will also be a meeting on Thursday on the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), featuring briefings by Special Representative and head of UNSOM Michael Keating, AU Special Representative for Somalia and head of AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) Francisco Caetano Madeira (via video-teleconference), and Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the Executive Director of UN Women.

At the subsidiary-body level, there will be a meeting of the 751/1907 Somalia and Eritrea Sanctions Committee on Tuesday (11 September).

The 2206 South Sudan Sanctions Committee is expected to convene on Tuesday to discuss the work plan of its Panel of Experts.

A meeting of the 2374 Mali Sanctions Committee is scheduled for Wednesday (12 September). This will include an update from the UN Police (UNPOL) on its cooperation with the Panel of Experts.
