From The Principal

I would like to thank everyone who supported Coffee Friday with Sonshine FM. This was a terrific school event that raised significant awareness of our chaplaincy program as well as various initiatives that are unique to Subiaco program, such as the social justice group and the habits of the mind practised in many classrooms.

We work very hard each and every day to teach our students the value of being nice to one another and how that happens through practice. Our students are extremely good at reflecting what they are taught in these areas and each day they amaze us all as over 700 students get to talk, walk and play together in harmony. We are so proud of them and proud of you as parents in shaping their lives with excellent values and respect and manners. Thank you for your partnership in this journey for your children. They are getting the best of us.

On behalf of the Subiaco Primary School staff, I would like the members of our school community to know that we are thinking of the many of you that have family or friends overseas at present and unable to return home. Our heartfelt thoughts are with you and your family in what is such a difficult time. If we as a school can support you and your children in any way, please reach out to us.

Staff are currently busy collecting and analysing evidence on which to allocate grades in the end of semester summative reports. The electronic student reports will be sent home later this term. If you have any concerns about your child’s progress, please make an appointment at a mutually agreeable time with the classroom teacher.

Importance Of Regular School Attendance

This week I would like to highlight the importance of our children attending school every day. Western Australian law stipulates that all school-aged children must go to and attend school every day. Each school is required to keep accurate attendance records for all its students. This includes taking attendance in the morning and afternoon for students in Kindergarten to Year 6

When a student’s attendance falls below 90%, the principal is required to investigate the matter and develop a plan (in consultation with the family) to address and restore regular attendance. Developing the habit of going to school every day is vital so children do not miss out on important ideas and skills they need for future learning. It is known that:

  • Missing half a day of school each week equates to one month of missed learning each year.
  • The attendance habits set by children when they first start school continue throughout their school life.
  • If children miss half a day of school each week between Pre-primary and Year 10, they would miss almost one full year of learning.
  • Learning is cumulative – if children miss a day, it is harder for them to catch up.

School Carpark

We are asking all parents not to use the school staff carpark between 7.00am – 5.00pm, but especially between 7.00-9.00am when the area is very busy with teaching staff and service vehicles arriving and cleaning staff leaving.

Recently there have been a number of staff cars damaged while parked in the carpark. Over the next few weeks we will be monitoring the flow of vehicle traffic in and out of the carpark.

Parents dropping their children off for before school activities including sport, music and chess are asked to use the drop off bays directly in front of the school along Bagot Road.

Book Fair

The Book Fair is open next week from Monday 14 June to Saturday 19 June in the school library. Visit us on any of those dates before or after school, or on Saturday morning during the Farmers’ Market for a look.

The opening hours are 8.15-9.00am and 3.00-4.00pm Monday to Friday, and 7.30am-12.30pm Saturday at the Farmers Market.

There will also be a competition, for everyone who spends over $10, to win a Baker's Delight Voucher for a free block loaf everyday for a month.

Late Arrivals

The number of students arriving at school after 8.50am is on the increase. Students arriving after the siren must be signed in through the Compass kiosk at the front office by an adult. All children are encouraged to be at school and in their classroom before the 8.50 siren so they have time to prepare for the day. A number of the specialist sessions and the daily fitness program commences at 8.50am sharp, and on assembly days participating classes are ready and move promptly to the Church Hall at 8.50am.

Coin Challenge - Social Justice Group

In Weeks 9 and 10 all students from K-6 are encouraged to bring along any spare coins to help fill their classroom jar.
All funds raised will be donated to Care Bags, which supports students going into foster care by providing them with a personalised backpack filled with essential items including pyjamas, a change of clothing, underwear, toiletries and a toy, and CARAD (Centre for Asylum Seekers, Refugees and Detainees)
To encourage participation in this very worthy SJG fundraiser, the class that raises the most will will be the recipients of a class prize organised by the Social Justice Group.

Reading For The Heart And Mind

The WA Branch of Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA WA) has launched a series of five online videos highlighting the benefits books and reading bring to readers from early childhood to young adults – Reading for the Heart and Mind.

The videos cover the important topics of Reading to Children, Imagination, Curiosity, Resilience and Self- Acceptance.

The Heart and Mind video series features books by many amazing WA children’s and young adults’ authors including titles from the CBCA Notables and Shortlist.
The video series comes with resources for parents and teachers to find the books featured in each video at their local library and to find more information about each topic.

We will include a link to one of the videos in each of the next five newsletters. This week is Reading to Children: https://youtu.be/ApWTGpnzSjk

From The School Psychologist

Learning how to make friends, working through disagreements and friendship "issues", and keeping friends are important aspects of development for children and young people. Relationship Skills is one of the five Core Competencies listed by CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning) for the development of overall student wellbeing.

I recently watched a videoclip from Greater Good Science Center (University of Berkeley, California), titled, "A Better Way to Apologize" by Jane Park (June 2021).  It is about what children can do when apologising, apart from saying, "I'm sorry", to restore the ruptured relationship with their friend of peer.

Yr 1 Subiaco Museum Visit
The Year One students discovered a piece of history right on our doorstep, the Subiaco Museum. We explored exhibits that showed the rich history we have right here in Subiaco. Rosie from the Subiaco Museum gave us an insight into family life in the past. A highlight of the visit was dressing up in children's clothes from one hundred years ago and becoming 'history detectives' by locating olden days household objects from the exhibits. Pre-primary Zoo Excursion

The children thoroughly enjoyed travelling to and from the zoo on the bus. Throughout the day, the children saw all their favourite animals in their habitats. Each child experienced an education session in the Gwabba Boodja (Beautiful Bushland) area of the zoo.

We had the opportunity to further develop an understanding of the six Noongar seasons which are: Birok - December/January, Boonaroo - February/March, Djeran - April/May, Makaroo - June/July, Djilba - August/September, Kambarang -October/November.

The children were given bibs representing the following animals:
Yarkiny - Western Swamp Tortoise, Yooran - Bobtail lizard, Nyingarn - Echidna, Kwodyar - Motorbike Frog, Ngoolark - Carnaby's Cockatoo, Wetj - Emu.

We then dramatised the activity of the animals during these seasons to help us understand the Noongar seasons.
A special thank you to everyone who helped to make the day a huge success. A great day was enjoyed by all. Click HERE for photos.

CSIRO – Bebras Competition

Bebras is an international initiative aiming to promote computational thinking among school students. The online challenge was undertaken in March by a number of students from years four to six at Subiaco PS.

Computers can be used to help us solve problems. However, before a problem can be tackled, the problem itself and the ways in which it could be solved need to be understood. Computational thinking allows us to do this. Computational thinking allows us to take a complex problem, understand what the problem is and develop possible solutions. We can then present these solutions in a way that a computer, a human, or both, can understand.

A group of students from year four and six were recently presented with awards after performing very well in the competition.  Congratulations to the following students for their results in the three categories:

Credit: Mei Anderson, Emily Chew, Aaron Hong, Kellie Lai, Toma Lassmann, Eva Zhao, Sam Lindley, Ashlea Potter, Vikash Vimalan, Jacques Binnie, Ari Goldstein, Iraj Chaudhuri, Tharundee Weerasinghe, Thomas Johnstone, Claudia Langsford, Tristan Alger, Dylan Chong, Annabel Rembalski, Liliana Baldwin, Charlotte Anderson, Alessandra Battaglia, Dariya Yavisheva.

Music News

String Immersion Program
Many of our Year 5 and 6 students who play stringed instruments participated in a String Immersion Program recently held at Bob Hawke College.

The program involved 3 after school workshops designed for students who learn stringed instruments to experience Bob Hawke College and its Music Program. Our students also performed with students from other local Primary Schools together with Bob Hawke College students.

During the the final session parents were invited to watch an impressive concert showcasing the music they had been preparing. It was an astonishing performance considering the students had only been working on the pieces for 3 weeks. Congratulations to all participating students. Well done.

Many thanks to Elizabeth Hamer (Teacher in Charge of Music) Bob Hawke College for organising this event.

Year 4 WASO Music Excursion
Our Year 4 students participated in a music excursion recently and were lucky to visit the Perth Concert Hall for an orchestral concert by the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra!

The orchestra performed Benjamin Britten’s ‘The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra’ which the students have been studying in class this term. The performance was amazing and we were so fortunate to experience our local orchestra performing during a live concert.

Musical Performances
Congratulations to Evie Martin, Olivia Adams, Claudia Choe and Vidaa Sandeep for performing in our sub-assembly as part of their flute ensemble recently. It was an excellent performance! Jhih Stamp and Fraser Allen from Year 5 introduced their double basses to their peers with a performance in the music class - well done!

Composition Challenge Winner
Congratulations to Artyom Yavishev, Year 4, for being successful in a music composition challenge set by the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra. Artyom’s composition, which he created in music class, was orchestrated and performed by the WASO during our excursion to the Perth Concert Hall.

Artyom composed a 16 bar piece based on pentatonic notes arranged as a Theme and Variation. He instructed the string family to play his main theme and wanted the whole orchestra to play the variation!  What an amazing achievement! Well done Artyom.

State Swimming Squad Selection

Congratulations to Ethan Potter on making the WA State Swimming Squad.

Ethan has been pouring a lot of time and energy into his swimming and the results are really starting to show. He broke a record that stood for over 20 years at the School Sport WA Champion Schools Primary Gold Division Swimming Carnival in Term 1.

We wish him all the best in the “Virtual” National Championship which will be taking place at the end of the year.

Tips for dealing with single-use plastics
Single-use plastics such as plastic bags, water bottles, straws, polystyrene, and food packaging are a major culprit to the plastics in our oceans and waterways. It is estimated that globally, 8 million tonnes of plastic ends up in the ocean each year. They contribute to landfill and the vast majority are made from petroleum, a non-renewable resource.

With Australians producing 1 tonne of plastic waste every minute and the plastics recycling rate only 11.8%, what postive actions can you take?
