21st Century Portraits/19th Century Techniques

[Artspace] at Untitled will offer a Saturday Seminar on Mar. 31 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. with Mark Zimmerman. His presentation, "21st Century Portraits/19th Century Techniques" will take a look at the art of contemporary photographers who have turned to antiquated processes to find a new way of capturing their subject's essence. Mark will also discuss his recent project, A Fragile Existence and he will demonstrate the wet-collodion process he utilized in the production of this body of work.

About his work, Zimmerman states, “My series, A Fragile Existence is the result of my eight-year-old son’s question about death. I, like many living in a Western culture, find death to be a taboo for discussion. Many believe if it is not talked about it will not happen. In my art, I explore the impermanence of existence, as a reminder that people, places, and things decline, decay, and die with the passage of time. Through my work, I invite viewers to contemplate their existence and the continuation of time, a twenty-first century memento mori (Latin for “Remember you must die”). Everything living will eventually die; nothing on earth is permanent. Life is as fleeting as an aging photograph. These fragile images can be used as a reminder that life is impermanent. My images appearing on thin fragile mirrors relate both to the delicateness of life and the vanity-minded society that America has accepted as the norm. As a viewer interacts with photographs of my wife’s fight with cancer, the impermanence of life is reflected. The thin, brittle unframed mirrors represent a metaphor of our daily lives.”

Oklahoma Friendly

The sixth annual Oklahoma Friendly National Juried Art Show, sponsored by the Oklahoma Art Guild and the Arts Council of Oklahoma will have its opening celebration Mar. 16 from 6 - 9 p.m. at the IAO Gallery in Oklahoma City.

The show will feature art in a wide range of media and styles by 150 artists. Selected works were chosen from over 730 submitted, each exemplify excellence in art from across the country.

The opening celebration will feature national art as well as the creative and unique flavors of Oklahoma in food and music. Catering will be provided by Starks Fine Dining of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. There is no admission cost.

Over $4,000 will be awarded during the reception in five categories at 6:30pm. Awards were chosen by National Awards Curator, Dr. Mary Ruth Smith, an internationally-exhibited artist, curator, and professor at Baylor University. Dr. Smith’s statement that “Ideas for imagery can come from anywhere and anything,” coupled with her varied background in educational and professional sides of visual arts, and her commitment to staying informed of current artistic trends are all qualities that make her an excellent curator for Oklahoma Friendly.

There will be a Gallery Talk & Tour with Dr. Smith on Mar. 17 starting at 10 a.m.

During her time in Oklahoma City, Dr. Smith will be leading a workshop March 14-15 entitled “The Expressive Stitch.” The workshop will explore how simple stitches can be used to make rich personal and meaningful imagery and is open to all skill levels. This workshop will also be held at IAO.

The jury panel for Oklahoma Friendly 2012 were: Marvin Embree, owner of Embree Gallery on Paseo; Jennifer Barron of the Arts Council of Oklahoma City, an OVAC Curatorial fellow and IAO representative; Caroline Farris, Oklahoma arts educator and developer of arts programming; and Michael Ashby, OAG Board President.
